Need help from current NY teachers....

Hi everyone!

I'm in Boston and getting my licensure in MA. I'm never going to use it ( ! ), but I have to get licensed in MA if I wanna complete my Master's in education and do my practicum.

FH and I are moving back to NY in the summer (2008). I need to get licensed in NY for teaching...

I'll have my Master's in elementary ed....what tests do I need to take? I know that my degree will transfer (as per reciprocity between MA and NY), but no one in NY DoE seems to know what I'll need to take to get licensed!

help! Thank youuuuuu

you have to take the LAST and the ATSW (I think those are the current tests). I am not 100% sure. STates are pretty crazy. Whenever you get hired the Human REsources dept will know exactly what you need to do. I had a crappy time transferring my license to VA. Everystate has such different requirements, its so annoying. Its so political especially since NCLB having highly qualified teachers, stupid, stupid stupid

For certification in general ed you need to take the LAST, ATS W and the CST Multi Subject - 3 tests in all.

To be certified in special education you'll need those tests plus one more- the CST Students with Disabilities. 4 tests in all.

Good Luck!

if you have MA certification, there may be reciprocation with NY, u should check that out before taking unnecessary tests

Yeah, that's what I was told - that there is reciprocity....but they told me I still have to take NY licensure tests? Does that make sense? I spoke to 3 different people and no one could give me a clear answer.

even though there was reciprocity (NY to VA) I still had to take 1 VA test. You may relaly have to do that

I went to school and was certified in MA, so I had to do the same thing. You can apply for reciprocity initially, which is good for 2 years, I think. Then you have to take all of the NY test to get your real NY certification. So the LAST, AST-W for elementary and then your subject area tests. If you contact BOCES they will walk you through everything.

ETA: If you apply for a reciprical license, you have to pay the $100 or whatever it is fee, and then when you complete all the tests, the state will automatically send you your certification, you don't need to reapply.

if the 2 states have reciprocity with eachother..thats the point of not having to take more tests..with most licenses that is usually the case

You will need to take the LAST, CTS-W and the content area test.. but you h ave a while to do it once you find a job.

It doesn't work that way in NY, unless something changed in the last 2-3 years. Myself, and many people I know, had MA certification and needed to take all the tests for NY to be eligible for permanent certification. I was told this by BOCES and a Superintendent of schools. You def. have to take the tests, the recipricol license is temporary.

LAST, ATS-W, and probably a CST (content specialty test, don't know if there's one specifically for ECE)

The required tests are the LAST, ATS-W and the CST.

If you're doing Elementary Ed then you will need the Multi-Subject CST. If it's for J.H.S or H.S I believe you need to take the CST in the subject area you will be teaching in.

Here is a website where you can find out some info about the tests and test dates I believe...
