Need help from teachers...very frustrated!!!

Original post by Leelee

I'm attempting to get my provisional certification this coming fall/spring...I have my BA in music and would like to teach elementary music. Here's the problem...
I have been to Adelphi on Monday. They were really vague in what I needed to do to get to this point. They gave me a print out from the NYS site and I need 4 classes, the seminars, I need to take 2 tests and student teach. I wasn't delighted with the people there and have decided to check out a few more schools in Nassau.
I just spent about an hour calling Hofstra and getting bumped around by 4 different academic offices.
Does anyone out there have a certification officer I could speak to or any suggestions???
I'm very anxious to get the balling rolling on this and so far, I'm very discouraged.

help!!!!

I'm with you Leelee. I would go in there with a few copies of a conferred transcript. That's why I have to go back.. bc the transcripts I brought in with me were old and not conferred... Other than that, it was $100 money order and I have to have something notarized. Oh, I attended a workshop as well. Good Luck!

Leelee, you have to take two state exams (the LAST and ATS-w), be fingerprinted, have taken a few violence and drug prevention seminars. You should try talking to Susan Lafemina at Hofstra. She is head of the certification office there and could help you....make sure you tell her that you are planning on enrolling at Hofstra for good measure! Maybe this will help you! I just received my provisional cert in april, swags is right the requirements have changed a bit, but I know you will still need thge things listed above! Good luck! FM me if you want susan's phone # or any add'l info.

I am so glad I saw this post. I have been considering making a career change to teaching as well. I had no idea where to begin. I just assumed I had to go into a Master's program since my undergrad degree isn't related to education. All your information was really helpful. Another question...this may sound stupid (i'm clueless) but would I have to apply and be accepted to a program or just take whatever classes I need? Do I have to make an appointment with boces to inquire about a provisional certificate or do I just walk in? As you can see I don't have much direction with this at all. Any additional information would help. Thanks so much!

Do you know who you saw at Adelphi? I went their for 4 years. Its really a good school and has a fantastic education program. Sometimes you come across one person who is a complete bone head (which I know I have) but otherwise the people their are not that bad

Hey Chippa!!
I've missed you!!
I saw Lisa Richardson...
I'm going to go back there with all my questions. I've called around to Hofstra, Post, etc. and got nowhere!
Do you know anyone offhand who I could speak to?

The one person who I love and would suggest seeing is retired. He was actually head of the English Department and a truely remarkable man.

IF you go to the registrar the short lady with dark hair and glasses is a pain in the butt. She is beyond vague. I cant tell you how many fights I got into with her.

Try and get in touch with the head of the education department.

EDUCATION, SCHOOL OF
HARVEY HALL Room 130
516 877 4100
ELAINE SANDS - DEAN of Education
P 516 877 4065

What I love most about the school is they have an ABLE program which is an adult back learning program. Its for adults who work during the day and go to school at night. I was considering doing it so I can get my degree.

Their is also another program a lot of my friends did when they were seniors was an intern program where they went to school and even student taught. It was a 2 in 1 year program which means instead of taking 2 years to get their masters they did it in 1.
