Need Help: Gaining American Citizenship (more info now)

Original post by Xelindrya

Jim has decided it's going to be easier just to become an American than to try to figure out if China or British Empire will let him get a passport through them.

He was born in Hong Kong.

Been here since he was 3.

Anyone even know where to begin??

FM or post would be great!

Well I thought it would be nice if he kept is own citizenship. I feel bad 'pushing' him into becoming an American. You should do so out of choice not forced to for ease sake or because you 'have' to.

I just got off the phone with the British Consulate. Man oh my, it's a tough thing to get him a passport. Since it would be his first. The amount of paperwork is amazing. That doesnt bother us much there was only two parts that are nearly impossible to obtain. His father's birth certificate and to have his father fill out a marriage declaration form. His father and he don't talk. And yes, it HAS to be his father, I asked.

So now I am going through the US lines to see what can be done. I just feel slimy saying 'Become American, it's so much easier'. It's so sad that our country makes it so easy comparibly.

It's a strange issue for me personally. My family is American by birth and hertiage or Choice. My father's side is mostly American Indian so they were kinda already here. My mother's side fled Spain to come here and wanted their children Americans. I feel uncomfortable asking someone to just 'do it'.

Maybe Im just nuts.

I think you still need the passport - have you considered trying to get your local politican to help? Might be worth a try

You started out with saying Jim decided to become an American. If that's not what he wants to do it seems you took the first steps to getting a British passport and you know where to begin.

Unfortunately, everything may not be in place for your honeymoon but you can always go at a later time.

Well the soup thickens.

Apparently after calling the very unhelpful US citizenship and Naturalization 3 times and going through three manuals, I find out this:

If his parents are US citizens by naturalization AND did so before he turned 18 then he is 'devirived' US citizen by default.

So now I have to find out when his mother became a US citizen. His father came here first and had US citizenship before Jim and his mother moved her..

GOD.. the drama.

PS: To all of you ladies.. thank you for letting me vent out my frustrations and ignorance with this!

That's bologna. If he served in the armed force, they should just give it to him. Some thanks he gets.
