I am so upset- my computer died on me... i mean smoke coming out of the back dead! There is no saving it. I had so many wedding ideas & pictures saved and now it'll be like starting over.
Anyway, I have to buy a new computer as soon as possible so I pulled up Best Buy's website & need help from all of you computer genious' b/c I have no idea on how to shop for one. tia Do any of these look good?

I've had gateway laptops forever and they have always treated me well. FH has an IBM and a Compaq theat he loves. MY parents have a dell and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread I think as long as you go with a well known name brand you'll have a great computer

I've only had Dells (laptops and desktops) and I've always been happy with them.
Did you have a tech look at your hard drive? Maybe you can still salvage some stuff on it?

what do you use it for? Usually, the compusa or bestbuy computers are packaged for specific purposes, and you frequently end up paying for features you don't need. I always customize them on the company website....
If you're a casual emailer / web surfer.... a $700 computer with a midrange processor and graphics card is fine. If you're into doodling/photoshop and watching movies, you definitely want to spring for a better processor and a good graphics card. Also don't forget the DVD drive!
It's also good to pay the extra $ for a larger harddrive, since they really don't cost much.... (Also spring for an external harddrive, so you can back-up your wedding ideas next time )
If you're into laptops, I'm in love with sony vaios. They are much more durable than gateways or Dells.... (I won't get into my personal experiences with gateway here. Suffice to say, I'm staying AWAY...) Thinkpads are the top end ones, but if you're not a corporation under contract to buy hundreds of them, they cost almost 50% more than vaios.

i love Macs (but they are more expensive).. one word of advice....get yourself an external hard-drive! It's basically a storage unit that connects to your computer via USB or Firewire connection.
Save all your data to the external. What i do is keep all my live work on the external, and then back it up to my desktop. This way in the event of a computer death, i just disconnect the external hard drive, attach it to a new computer & i am up & running in no time because the newest stuff was on the external.

SERIOUSLY. My fh is a computer Genious. That is what he does for a living. He only uses dell. We have about 12 in the house now. They are great, very reliable. He says never buy a MAC.

oh yeah, FH is a computer geek.... he built his own gaming computer!
That thing is so powerful it will take over the unviverse one day... (The blue LED lights in the case pulse all night long... it's like it's breathing )
He obviously poo poo's buying a pre-fab computer but condones the purchase of a vaio, since laptops are more difficult to build.
