Need Help - Ladies who know about cats! **update on bottom**

There has been a family of cats (we think) in our neighborhood for months now turning over garbage cans, etc. Well tonight, with all this rain, we have the windows open with just the screens and I hear crying outside.

FH goes outside, and its a tiny little kitten (he says - I haven't seen it, and I am actually afraid of cats). My heart is breaking. What can we do? Should we try to capture it? Where would we bring it? We don't even have anything to capture it with! Aside from that we have a puppy at home that is allergic to everything. It woud definitely need to go to a vet immediately right?

Please - if anyone knows of someone I can call please let me know! FH is looking for a flashlight right now. At this point I am ready to adopt it because I can't bear to hear a living thing crying!

Thanks! I'm calling some now, but I keep getting vm. Even at the ASPCA!

I just don't want FH trying to get it on his own!

Bring it in!!!!!!!! It is cold and soaking wet. I would call Commack animal hospital-they are 24 hours and ask if they would take it. I know it's late but please don't leave the little one outside.

Re: Need Help - Ladies who know about cats!

if you really want to help it right away, you can open a can of fresh food, even dog food will help and put it somewhere near your doorway.

Once the cat smell if she would go towards the can, at least I know my cats will! They go crazy over yummy canned food!

Once she comes close perhaps you can move the can to your dog's kennel? Leave a soft towel inside so she can sleep in there too. That way she's outta teh way of your dog should he start developing sniffles! Easier to move move her when she's inside a kennel...

Give us an update!

Re: Need Help - Ladies who know about cats!

could you keep it in your bathroom overnight? just set up a litter box (you can get that at a supermarket which should be still be open at this hour) and put out food and water. tomorrow morning call a NO KILL shelter. FM if you have a problem- i work for an animal shelter in the city and if you can't find placement by tomorrow, I'll ask the directors of my shelter what they suggest. Whatever you do, do not let your dog go near the kitten----it's very likely that the kitten has fleas and they'll jump to your dog.

Re: Need Help - Ladies who know about cats!

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly last night. It's amazing how this site is the first thing I turned to knowing that I would get good info quickly!

Eden- thanks for the advice! We wound up putting Charlie's old crate back together and going back out to at least get it in there and then we would figure out where to put it. We couldn't find it when we went back outside (mainly FH because I really am afraid of cats). We looked around for about a half hour, tried to lure it with some dog food and then we decided to at least make some shelter, so we covered the crate on all sides with plastic, put some towels in it for warmth and then some food. We feel like he might be part of a big family because for months garbage cans in my neighborhood have been turned over. This morning the food is gone, but it doesn't look like the crate was used. When we get home this evening from work it will be early enough to call the numbers we got from 311 yesterday to come check for the cats.

Thanks for everything ladies!

What you did was great----at least they had food. Poor little guys, all out there alone and in the cold. It makes my heart break.

If you cannot find homes for any of these cats, please let me know. I am a cat lover and if I convince FH to take in another one, I would take it.

Please, whatever you do, don't bring them to the town shelters or anything like that b/c they will kill them. I have rescued both of my cats from a kill shelter.

Please FM me if you catch them and cannot find a place to bring them that would not kill them.

Thanks.

And you did an awesome job last night!!

Re: Need Help - Ladies who know about cats! **update on bottom**great news!!

GREAT NEWS!!

FH and I came home today from work and my neighbor was outside. She's been away for the past couple of weeks. I told her about the cats (she knows about them too because of the garbage can thing), and about last night, and how we were going to just call the numbers from 311. She said she will take them!!!

She's got 2 dogs already (one was a rescued stray), and her cat passed away recently. She had mentioned over the summer that she might take them in, but now she said she would definitely do it! We brought the crate over and told her she can keep it and she is going to put food out to lure them tonight! She said she usually keeps a bowl out there for them anyway, but I guess since she's been away they've been roaming around looking.

Thank you all sooo much, for helping, for offering to take them in, and for the words of encouragement!! I am so glad that I don't have to call those numbers. I'm ashamed to admit that I never even heard of a kill shelter before last night.

Awesome!! I am so happy to hear that she is an animal lover and will take them in. Whew, I spoke to FH about it and he thought I was crazy when i asked him if we could take one in, if it came down to that. Of course, in the end, if need be, I would have taken one in regardless b/c once he would've seen a kitten, his heart would've melted!!

This is really great news. Thanks for making my night.

Dgirl, that's great to hear! By the time I'd read your post it was really late, so I didn't bother replying.

It's awesome that your neighbor will take them... and props 2 ya for caring so much! What you did was so sweet!
