SO... I have the same photographer that my friend did for her wedding, and while I love MY engagement pics, I really didn't like her wedding pictures at all. She didn't really have any photojournalistic pics... they were all really posed and i just didn't like them - not the look we're going for at all.
Anyway - I think part of the problem is that I really want a second photographer (which isn't just offered as part of my package) to take JUST photojournalistic shots. FH thinks it's a waste, but I want some of those outside the box pictures that everyone has, and I don't think my photographer has that capability (I could be wrong, but that's what i got from looking at my friends pics).
Here's the dilemma:
FH's friend's mom is a photographer and she's AWESOME. Very photojournalistic, gets great shots, etc. We didn't really think of her when booking a photographer, but she told us directly that she would have pretty much shot our wedding for free. SO - do you think I can ask her to be my second photographer? Do you think my phoptographer will allow that? I really want a second photographer but don't want to spend the extra money for that!!!
What do you ladies think? TIA!!

Its your wedding, do what makes you happy! If you want those types of pictures, then do whatever it takes to get them. Your photographer cant be mad...at the end of the day, they are still getting paid to do what they do.
I say go for it!

i think you can have FH friends mom take pics...but i would tell your photographer in advance. i wouldnt necessarily 'ask' your current photographer, i would more tell her that a family friend is taking pictures as a wedding gift for you and you would still like her services if she is willing to work together with your friend. it is prob a tough spot to be in and the photographer may not be happy but in the end they are your pictures and you need to be happy!!! check to see if your contract says anything about using additional people or not just to be safe.

I agree...I've heard of other brides hiring (and paying for) a second photographer, and it worked out fine. The fact that you're getting a 2nd for free is even better!
These ppl are professionals and I can't imagine them getting upset because they're not the ONLY photographer shooting the wedding.
I say go for it!

I happened to see who your photog was and that was exactly the reason we decided not to go with them. We specifically asked and stated that we desired the 2nd photog and they REFUSED. I think you can just tell them flat out that you want to hire a 2nd person as the photojournalist.

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I need to sit down with FH and talk to him about it... he's really against it since it's a friend, but she basically OFFERED!!! So, I'm like 'why not?!' If she's entirely photojournalistic, I doubt she would get in the way!!

The other option would be to have disposables on the tables and those would likely get you the non-posed shots you want... and ask all friends who bring cameras to upload to a shutterfly account that you can create... just ideas if FH is totally against asking the friends mom.

I'd let her take pics. She's basically offered and she's going to take them anyway right? Were you inviting her? Her gift to you could be her pics.

I don't think we're inviting her... definitely inviting her son (FH's friend). Thanks ladies... I think I just need to talk to her and my photographer without FH! LOL

Re: Need help ... (long, sorry!)
I would ask! We got one photographer because the package with 2 was just insanely high. I have two friends that went to school for photography and they take amazing pictures, so I asked the photographer if he would be cool with one of them running around and he actually said he would love to have them work beside him for the night, he could tell them what shots to get and whatnot, which I thought was awesome!

wow, that's really cool! my photographer is a great guy, so i'm hoping he won't have a problem with it.
Are you going to use your friends photos in your album??

I'm not sure yet, I think I might just take her photos and make an albulm off shutterfly! I've done this a million times and it really comes out nice :)

Heya! Do what makes you feel comfortable! Its your wedding! If you can't add on a second photog and your friends mom is still willing to shoot your wedding - discuss it with your studio about allowing her to work with them as the photojournalistic photogrpaher. My friend who is like my cousin, is a photograpaher, offered to shoot our wedding as a gift because she reccomend we should have a second shooter - we told our photogrpaher about it and he said he'd happily meet with her and so long as she doesnt interfere with his work and we we're good to go. See if your studio is willing to meet with your freinds mom, and so long as she doesnt get in their way I think you should be fine.
At this point you already have a contract with your wedding photographer - and while it would favor them to add ona second photographer, it also is in their best interest to make you happy. So long as you communicate I think you should be fine, especially since your freind mom is offering her services as a gift. HTH
