Need help, my cat is putting tiny holes in our couch.

Need help, my cat is putting tiny holes in our couch.

We just got new couches and one of our cats puts her claws into it when she stretches on the couch. So, we have few tiny nail holes. How can I stop her from doing this?

She did it to our leather but we knew we were getting rid of it so we didn't care.

Thanks so much.

Karen

This is the problem! She thought it was OK for her to do before, so now she doesn't see any reason why she can't keep doing it. So it would be tough to modify her behavior now, but you can try... just don't let her on the couch, period. Or put a thick blanket over one part of the couch, that you'll allow her on. Other than having her declawed, there's not much you can do but try to train her to stay off of the couch. Make sure you have a lot of other places that it's OK for her to use her claws, like scratching posts. Cats are hard animals to train, but they will get it eventually, if you stay consistent!

I had a feeling we made a mistake w/that.

We have 2 cats. They have lots of things. A scratching post, a kitty condo (2 actually) and a kitty couch. I would feel awful not letting them on the furniture, they love to lay on top of it. I guess I'll just keep telling her no and maybe she'll get it. I was thinking of squirting her w/water to see if that helps. I read they don't like that.

I suppose we have spoiled them.

Thanks for the info.

Karen.

I'm also going to get into the habit of trimming their nails at least 2x a month, if not more. Pia doesn't go for the couch at all, she likes the scratching post. Mia, is the one who stretches up the couch and then puts her nails in. She is also the one who doesn't like to have her nails clipped and fights us on it.

Invest in softpaws- they are a soft plastic cap that goes over the cat's nail. Not inhumane like declawing, but takes away that sharp point.. and of course- the best part is they come in fashion colors!

Sassy, those are great, I just checked out the link. How do they stay on, do vets do this. I think this may be just what we need. We would never declaw them.

The way we get ours to stop doing it is by spraying them with water. Though that doesnt stop it when we are not home!

Try looking in the pet store. They sell some furniture saver things that you put on the corners of couches. Also, they sell this spray called Repellent, it comes in an orange can, we had to use it to stop the cat from peeing in places and from climbing the x-mas tree. You sparay a box or something and place it right near where you want them to stay away from. It works great for us. They hate the smell of it.

My kitty is named Mia too!! And she's a lot like yours.. she will NOT stop straching our sofa and has basically destroyed it in less than one year (she's only a year old... ) And like yours, she is a total TERROR when we try to clip her nails and goes nutty on us

She is so wacky she doesn't even mind being sprayed with water like most cats do! And she totally rejects the sctaching post also and goes straight for the sofa... none of those repellants we purchased from the pet store works either . She's a PITA but we love her so

I have resolved myself to a messed up sofa.. well at least for now, until I can figure out something

As far as cutting the nails go, the only time I could cut my kitty's nails was when he was sleeping. Even if he would wake up, he wouldn't cause a problem. I would just let him fall asleep in my lap then clip away. Of course you need to keep the clippers near you so you don't wake him up by moving!

No. I do them myself.
I trim her nails down first and then you put a drop of the non-toxic glue that is provided in the cap... you extend the nails & slip on- it's very easy...
