Ok, here is my problem. We went furniture shopping over the weekend and I like both light and dark wood. I can't decide which to get. My husband wants to kill me. I have always thought I wanted to get light wood but now I think the dark wood is so classy looking.
P.S. We just painted our bedroom a light green (sage) color. So bedroom ideas I could really use your help with.
I have always liked light colors, beige, earthy tones, just to give you an idea of my taste. I don't like modern (black and white) or deep colors. I think County French someone said they had that I had liked.
What do you think I would be happier with. Somethings an outside prespective helps. Becuase internally I am going crazy!
We are also thinking of doing the bedroom in dark wood (I posted a pic here once). Its a very classy set with clean lines in dark wood. And doing the dining room and living room in light (almost white) color wood. What do you think.
Please help me, I am going BESERK! :)

I like light wood only because we have dark furniture now and I am constantly dusting it. You see every little dust dropping. Drives me nuts.

If you are doing other areas of your house in light, go for the dark! Then you can have both.

Re: Need help please..
I like light wood...my husband likes dark wood...so what to do??? Well we bought dinning room furniture in Oak that is like a reddish/honey color. I was the in between that we were looking for! Our carpet is a sage green and the walls are cream with a sage green accent. The furniture looks wonderful in it.
That being said, I think a good way to decide is based on the quality of the wood you are buying.
If you are getting something that is not real wood or not of the greatest quality, then light wood is probably you best bet. When it scratches, etc. .. for whatever reason, its better at hiding the flaws. The stuff I have bought at Ikea is usually in the light or medium color.
If you getting something really quality and heavy wood, go with the darker stain. Not only does expensive wood look better dark IMO but it encourages you to take really good care of it b/c it so dark.

I like light wood (that's what we will get) I have heard bad stories of dust on dark wood (but it is very pretty)

I prefer pecan type colored woods, but Stef's advise is perfect. I never purchased a really, really good DR set or anything and then the dark wood just looks beautiful. Also, it depends on the overall look of your home.

Also want to add that depending upon your color preferences, you may want to stay away from the medium colored/honey wood. Because it has an orange cast to it, its tough to get pleasing color arrangements.

Re: Need help please..
Well our house is a cape. Its not very big or formal looking. Its very open. You walk in the front door to a living room to your right, or go straight to an open kitchen with nook (black and white) but will be changed. THen to the right is the dining room. No walls sep. kitchen from dining room. and dining room is VERY close to living room. So its all open. Not very formal looking at all. If you would have went to the left as you walk in the house, you would walk down the hallway to bedrooms and bath.
What do I do???????????????????

Denise...i have a railroad room house too. I dont think you need to have a grand home to have nice pieces....just keep everything in the same color family.

Yes, but being it is very light and on the smaller side, would I be better off going light?
Then can I have dark wood in the bedroom??

I like both light and dark, but I actually have preferencs according to which room I am in. I like dark wood for bedroom and dining room, but light wood for kitchen, bathroom (if there is any wood) and family room.basement.
Either way, if you get nice peices that match, you can't go wrong. Let us know what you decide.

I have a very small house too and Im all about dark wood. I think light wood is really lovely for lofty spaces but unless you have dark walls, its hard to make a light piece stand out.
I dont think you have to have everything in exactly the same shade..as long as they compliment each other. Dark wood and light wood can work well together if its in the right shades.
