need help with booking rooms

I went to a little motel today to book some rooms for oot guests. our wedding is in august and we will probably need about 5-10 rooms. well, i booked the rooms and even looked at one. i like its proximity to the reception site. our guests could walk if they so desired or people could pick them up on their way there. anyway, i am confused. the guy said something about two months before the wedding, he will tell me who booked and how many rooms were booked. but i had to leave my credit card number with him. my question is why? how do i get charged? why would i get charged? it doesn't make sense and i am a bit confused. any help?

I would call and ask him why he wanted the credit card number. I did not have to leave that at either of the hotels I booked.

I had to leave a CC just in case I didn't book the minimum amount... double check with him.

I blocked off rooms at two hotels and did not have to leave my credit card number... I would check and find out why they need it... they must want to charge you for something!

Same here. The card will not get charged until the time of booking IF the minimum of 10 rooms hasn't been filled.

I would call for clarification/reassurance.

so they charge you for the difference ( say 2 rooms)
I've heard differnet things.
one palce told me if all 10 weren't booked the oens that did book wouldn't get the grouorate & another told me they would, & I didn't need to leave a cc (I don't think- contract is on the way)

usually they release the rooms a month before, so they shouldn't charge you.
if they re-book, then they are getting paid twice for the same room.

I blockd hotel rooms at two different hotels(Howard Johnson & Holiday Inn) and I did not have to leave a CC #. I just had to sign the contracts. I was told they would hold 8-10 rooms until the middle of July. After the deadline my guest would have to pay the going rate for the room at that particular time.

I would definately call and find out why they wanted your CC#. I blocked 20 rooms at Holiday Inn and did not have to meet a minimum or give a CC. They only thing is that they only hold the rooms until one month before, if people dont book before then they dont get the spec rate. IMO - It is totally ridicously for a hotel to charge if you dont meet a minimum, they can just book the room to other people. I wouldnt use a hotel like that
