Need Job Advice - Long

Need Job Advice - Long

Ok, I'm having a dillmma and know you guys can offer some great support/advice. I left my job as a marketing manager in the city in april of '03 to pursue my masters in teaching. I loved my job, made a lot of money, and worked for a great cause (protecting the env't), but I felt as though I was missing my true calling. I also did not want to commute to the city anymore because I want to start a family. I busted my arse to complete my masters and graduated in a year with a 4.0. I sent my resume out to many schools, and did not receive one phone call for an interview. I worked as a pre-k teacher, and as a sub TA, but could not survive off of $9 - $10/hr bc I have a mortgage to pay. I started temping at Ryder Transportation of all places bc it paid more than $10/hr and they offered me a management position paying half of what I made in the city, but double what I was making as a temp. Since I did not hear anything from the schools, I figured it would be a short fix until August.

Tonight I received a phone call from a tutoring agency I interviewed with a while back and they want me to tutor some children, but the hours they want me to tutor are at 4 pm and this job that I literally just accepted is from 12-9. I initially wanted to sub and tutor, but I really need money. I heard the only way to really get hired in a LI school as an ELED teacher is to sub first to get my foot in the door, or to work as a TA, but I need a steady, decent income. Does this mean I can never fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher and that I'll forever be paying off student loans for a profession I'll never go into? Also, my certification is going to run out if I don't find something soon. I'm so depressed. Any suggestions/advice? Sorry so long. I need hugs. I'm wishing I never left my marketing job and I feel lost. TIA.

You have to whats best for you and your husband. Is it more money tutoring? Go with your heart, and whats convenient for you.

Hi!

Have you looked into working in a NYC public school to start out? I know that many LI schools want teachers with BOTH a few years experience and a masters degree, so for many who are missing one of the two (like myself--almost done with masters) it's easier to find something in the city.

I've been working in the Bronx for 3 years now and although the commute is hard, the pay is okay and I'm getting the 'experience' I need while I persue my masters. In a year or two I will attempt to find something in the suburbs!

Lots of luck!

ETA---Just reread ur post-- I guess the city option is out--still lots of luck!!!

The tutoring is only three times a week from 4-5 so that would not be enough. Plus, it's not secure enough. The parents could decide at any time that they cannot afford or do not want/need a tutor anymore. The tutoring would be more of a side job, but I can't pursue it unless I go into teaching bc most parents want tutors after school at like 4ish. The only way for me to really swing it is to sub and tutor, and both are too insecure. Thanks for your kind words and advice. I really appreciate it. And thanks to everyone else for your hugs, advice, sympathy, and support.

Yes, this is not an option. I would have done NYC teaching fellows if I wanted to work in the city. Thanks anyway though. I am happy that you are going that route bc you will definitely be a better candidate for a teaching position on LI. Why does it have to be so hard?

Is there any way you could possible tutor on the weekends? You would be able to keep the job you just accepted and gain some additional experience.

Is Queens out too? I know it's part of the city, but you cold possibly find something close to Nassau.

I asked him to keep me in mind if anyone wanted a tutor for the weekends and he said he would, although it's very uncommon. Most parents want their children to be tutored three times a week after school.

As far as Queens, yes, it's out. I live way out east. Thanks for all of your help though.

I feel better. I know things will work out.

.gl i hope things work out for you all you can do is decide which job your heart is really set on doing. the temp job that you are working at will it later on go into fulltime? or you can tell the other job that you want to work at , can they give you this amount of money to work there and is there anyway they can match the money you are making at the temp.i hope things work out!
