Need opinions-- Especially from anyone who is Jewish

OK as some of you may remember my Grandmother died a few months before my wedding. We are fast approaching the anniversary of her death. To be honest since she was the last practicing Jew in my family I didn't think that we would have the unveiling but we are. Here lies the problem.

Please bear with me this might be long.

My Grandmother and my Mother (also my Mother and her brother) had a HUGE falling out about a year before my Grandmothers death. They still were not speaking at the time of my Grandmothers death. I forced my Mother to go to her mother's funeral because I thought she might regret it. My mother, though she is incredible, one of her biggest flaws is that she is probably the most stubborn person that I have ever met and cannot let things die for the sake of peace. Well anyway she made everyone uncomfortable at the funeral and did not talk to her only brother the whole time. Needless to say because of this my uncle (my ONLY immediate family left on this side) did not come to my wedding. My Aunt just E-mailed me to see if I want to come to the unveiling and what date is good for me. My mother heard from a cousin that the date is already set.

I am going to be in Florida during Feb break (where my Grandmother is buried) but all the way North and very far. So that means that I would have to

(a) cancel our trip (probably the only one we will take this year) and see if they can schedule the unveiling for the week that I am on break

(b) take several days off from school and pay for air fare again and miss DH's birthday

(c) no go

My mother thinks that I just shouldn't go. I feel awful about not going. I also feel awful about asking Frankie to cancel our trip since he is excited to take me to Disney for the first time and of course DMIL is anxiously awaiting us to come visit her! I also feel awful to miss DH's birthday? What do I? My mother is not going and I think that she should. She said an unveiling is nothing. To me it is important and shows the respect that my Grandmother deserves. The unveiling must take place before March 4th.

I am so confused. I feel awful all around. What do you think I should do?

Not to sound stupid or anything but what exactly is an unveiling?

Noreen, I will try my best to explain but someone who is a practing Jew might explain it better.

My understanding is that it
1 signifies the end of the period of mourning
2 Jewish people are not supposed to go to the cemetary prior to the 'unveiling' (of the tombstone)
3 Part of the tradition is go to the cemertary you remove a cheese cloth that is drapped over the tombstone and a pray is said. After that the family has a small meal at the grave site. The meanig of which I am not completely sure.

I hope this helps explain it. Anyone who is Jewish please correct me if I am wrong, I am not completely sure.

I am so sorry you have to go throug this! As if loosing a loved one isn't painful enough...

i think you are right to think that your mom should go to the unveiling, It isn't 'nothing'.

It is my understanding that a year needs to pass because the family needs time to come to terms (more or less) with the loss, and the soul of their loved one who passed is now in a 'better place'. this is not the most correct explanation there there is, but you get the idea! Also, as you may know, according to our religion, you are not supposed to visit the graves just whenever you feel like it. Only on yorzheg (?)., which I believe is—for the lack of a betetr word—anniversary of death.

it would have been nice for your mother to be there, it seems that she has a better chance and more opportunities to make it there than you. Unfortunately we can't control other people's behavior!

It seems that it would be so inconvenient for you to be there because of the fact that you live across the country! You also have obligations to your new family, your DH.You should make the decision that will show respect without hurting the feelings of your man and yoru relationship. I know, easy for me to say...

Just wanted to offer words of encouragment, I feel for you! Again, sorry you have to going throuh this...

I don't have any suggestions to offer but I feel bad for you and hope it works out. There seems to be no easy answer on this one. I think it's beautiful that you cared enough about Grandma to want to show her respect and consideration.

Good luck!

Thanks you. I have not gotten to talk to Frankie about this since I really have not seen him in the last 2 days so we will talk about it tonight or tomorrow. I hate being torn.

I think you should go to the unveiling.

My grandmother died a year ago. I never said goodbye to her. I never went to the funeral. She never met FI.

I have yet to been able to fully mourn her death since I really didnt get to say goodbye to her.

The unveiling is in a few months and in a way I am really looking forward to it. It's my chance to say goodbye. It's going to be the moment I have waited for to say my goodbye's to both my grandparents (as morbid as it sounds. I didnt go to my grandfathers either. I became physically ill wiht his passing)

The unveiling isn't just nothing. It's symbolic. I know the one for my grandmother to me is symbolic.

I think it's important in way to go

you have to do what you think is best
I went to florida for a day for my grandfathers unveiling, my aunt and great aunt had planned and unveiling for my grandmother that got rescheduled and then was a very small thing that no one even told me

I was upset about that and then my mom said it was okay b/c so and so was there.... I went after the unveiling to visit the grave though when I went to florida

Is the date set yet? If not, and if your aunt is asking when would be good for you, why not set it for when you are down there and take a day to fly or drive up to the unveiling and come back the same day?

It's a touch situation

because I'm a spelling stickler, The anniversary of someone's death is a Yahrzeit (pronounced Yar-Tzite).

Go to the unveiling. Even if you are just going for a day, make it a short side trip.

I wish your mom would go, it might make her feel better. But you can only do so much.
