What is the purpose of a rehearsal dinner (besides rehearsing?)
Is it to thank everybody, including those from out of town that are not involved in your wedding party?
We are having serious issues.

Re: NEED OPINIONS...Please help
I thought is was because everyone is hungry after the rehearsal?? Or maybe that's where the tradition came from. I don't know - we're not going to have a rehearsal or dinner. It's just too much to do.

Steph I also think that it is to thank everyone. I know that is where we are giving everyone their gifts!

If I don't have one- is this ok? And if I do, what about out of town guests?

I've always been under the impression that this was the time where you can express your appreciation to your BP for participating in the wedding. You can give your gifts at this time as well. It's most appropriate and convienant to do this immediately following rehearsal since everyone is supposed to be there.
For me . . .it's another huge expense that I didn't really think about as I was putting this HUGE BP in my wedding. Big BP means Big RD bills. We'll have fun nevertheless!

Re: NEED OPINIONS...Please help
rehersal dinner helps the bridal party to get to know each other and relax before the big day!
to be honest...we didn't rehearse...we just wanted to GTG...and we did it 2 days before, b.c DH's uncle wanted to drink at the RD and didn't want to be hungover for the wedding...lol
this is where we gave our gifts to our bridal party...I also asked my 2 oldest friends to come (not in the BP) since one was from out of town
for other out of town guests my parents invited them to a diner the night before (my parents are huge diner fans)

We didn't have a rehearsal, but we had a dinner the night before to welcome the out of town guests and to thank the bridal party. This should be fun, not stressful! If budget is the issue, having a backyard BBQ is just as appropriate as a fancy restaurant. Its just about getting the folks together for an early celebration.

I think RD is a nice thing to do, if the budget allows.
It is perfectly ok not to do it, but you just might want to take a look at your guest list. For example, how many people came from out of town? Did you give them ideas for something to do the night before if they are coming in early?
Also, are you having anything the day after (brunch)?
I think the RD is a nice way to thank people, relax, and just extend the actual wedding weekend.
Remember, you can always have a RD the weekend before...it does not have to be the same weekend as the wedding. Again, something to evaluate based on your list.
However, most importantly, don't feel pressured to do it 'because everyone else does'. If you don't want to do one, then don't! It's perfectly ok.
Good luck!

Re: NEED OPINIONS...Please help
Like everyone else said, it's to thank everyone for participating and to hand out gifts. I'm giving gifts to my girls at a BM tea earlier that afternoon...the tea will be spiked, of course and I thought it would be more fun to have just the girls.
Actually, the thought came about b/c we weren't planning on having a RD but FMIL said that was something she wanted to pay for us...so, we're having one.
Good luck with your decision...

Re: NEED OPINIONS...Please help
It is a great way to say thank you, but you have many options.... BBQ Cater from a local resturant make food, based on number of people. You cook, or have family members or girls in BP help make a dish Hero and maybe make lisagna, sausage, etc. Do a BP brunch, your groom could do something with the guys Have cocktails and fingerfoods to follow.
You know your family and the people in your BP, you can make it casual. That is what I am doing. It's all family in BP. Most of the out of towners we made apart of the ceremony (BP, readers) so they are invited anyway. We have one guy who might come from Ireland, so he would be invited too. [It's only about 25 people of so. Thank godness.]

Re: NEED OPINIONS...Please help
Our Rehearsal dinner's purpose was to thank everyone in BP as well as our parents for all they did to help us plan for our wedding. We did not invite out of town guests (even though we didn't have very many). I think Rehearsal dinners are important to have because you get to thank your BP in a more intimate personal way before the wedding festivities.
