My mom wants to throw us an engagement party, in fact, shes insistent on it , which is great and all, BUT she wants to have it at a catering hall. I feel that that is too formal, and not really what I would prefer. It would be about 150 people! (I would much rather have something more laid back). Do I dig in my heels, or leave it be??? Although, I have an italian mother, so I don't think the arguing will change anything.

Re: Need some advise...
i personally don't feel the need for engagment parties. if i was in your position i would tell my mom to give me the money that she would spend on the party & then save it for the wedding. but thats just me

You can always have it at one of the 'less fancy' catering halls- maybe KoC?

I'd see if she would let you scale back a bit...or maybe do a brunch or something so it's not so similar to your wedding

If you would really like something less elaborate, then just tell her what you would prefer... like a small gathering at a restaurant, etc..

I had somewhat of the same problem but my aunt was throwing it. I felt so bad that she was spending the money and thought it was unnecessary so I cried everyday until she cancelled it.

I would def. talk to them! Tell them how you feel.
My parents were the same way until I told them I only want a luncheon and they had to scale back a little, we are now having 85 people and following my wishes no dj just a nice luncheon to celebrate.
