80-year marriage started with ride home

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) Roy Bauman didn't think much of it when he gave two girls a ride home decades ago. But he has been married to one of them for the last 80 years.
Bauman, 102, met his wife Minerva, 96, when he gave her and a friend a ride into the small Kansas mining town where they lived.
'I guess it was love at first sight, as far as I can see,' Minerva Bauman said in a recent interview.
Roy Bauman already had a girlfriend at the time, but he said he 'started going with her (Minerva) the next Saturday night.'
Minerva's mother made them wait about a year and a half, until her daughter turned 16, before the couple married on Oct. 5, 1922.
Minerva Bauman said people always ask the secret to their relationship lasting so long, but she can't explain why they've been happy so long.
'We've had our ups and downs, like everybody else has,' she said. 'I guess we never did fight. We talk it over instead of fighting.'
The couple offers this advice for people getting married these days:
'Be honest with each other, that's the biggest thing,' Minerva Bauman said. And Roy Bauman added, 'Don't do too much fighting that'll ruin any marriage.'
