is it 'required' to send out STDS? if you don't - are you ensured less people will come?

It is not required, but it is a courtesy if there are alot of OOT guests coming, and if they need to book hotel rooms.

you don't HAVE to, BUT if you have a lot of OOTers and people who generally travel and are on the go, then i personally think it's a good idea to do so...

It's definitely not required to send out STDs...in fact, I've never received one, and I've been invited to about 8 weddings this year!
I don't know if not sending them is a guarantee you'll get less people, but if you're hoping to get a nice percentage NOT coming, I certainly wouldn't send them out.
ETA: We had a lot of out of town family coming, but they all knew when the wedding was b/c we told them, so we didn't feel a need to send out anything formal.

We didn't do them but I think they can be helpful if you are getting married on a holiday weekend, etc
BUT please remember that if you do send someone a STD send them an invitation. So make sure you are really sure about your guest list

We just ordered ours.. out of the 267 that are on our invite list.. we ordered 50 STDs..
Wedding party and VIPS- oh and OOT. That's it.

We didn't - but I only have a few family members who are OOT - and they all know. Most of my friends know as well.
