Need your help! - Not wedding related (please read - long)
I have a huge problem! My fiance found out 4 weeks ago that he got a job in San Diego and that we needed to move asap. So we filled our apt. for May 1st in Manhattan since we were in a lease and moved out to San Diego over a week ago. I don''t have a job at this point but am looking. My problem is that the couple that said they would take our apt. backed out today! It''s already May 6th!!!!! The boyfriend changed his mind on the place and they went far into the paperwork process, but not far enough to tie them to the apt. So now my fiance and I are responsible for the rent until we can find someone to fill it! We definitely can''t afford two apartments at once and I''m not even working and we are trying to save for the wedding. I''m really freaking out about it. It will be really hard to find someone to take the NYC apt. from out here. If any of you know anyone that is looking for a one bdrm apt. on the upper east side in Manhattan please have them email me at [email protected] asap. The rent is $1925 and the apt. is newly rennovated. Thank you! I really want to cry right now :(

Read your lease VERY carefully. I am not familiar with the property law of NY, but many leases that I have seen in MD contain provisions for limiting your damages if you must leave because of a change in your employment situation. There is also usually a provision for early termination that might hold you to three months rent or something like that. I broke a lease once and I had to pay one month's rent and that was all. So read your lease carefully, and if you know an attorney, ask them what your rights are. The law should also require your landlord to be actively looking for someone to rent to. They should not be able to sit back and do nothing while you pay rent for an apartment you are not living in.
SOrry I can't be more help to you. Let me know how it turns out.

July bride.......
I work in Manhattan and $1925
sounds like a lot for a 1 bedroom.
No? Anyway, have you thought of
placing an ad in maybe the Village
Voice?

July bride.......
Hi Lisa! It turns out $1925 is a great deal for a one bdrm in a luxury doorman building. A lot of my friends are paying over $2500 for their one bedrooms in the city. I'm thinking of putting an ad in the village voice, it's just hard about spending money now and it's $75 to place an ad there for one week with 4 lines. Pretty steep. Thanks.
