one of joshs best friends mothers just passed away on valentines day... i met the mother once, but have hung out with joshs best friend many many times... what is proper etiquette for me? Like i didnt really know the mother, and i know the friend, but not THAT well, but i still want to pay my respects...
thanks!

maybe you can mail a card with your condolences to josh's friend from you and josh?

you can send the family a vase with flowers with a sympathy card, some people even send baskets of fruit or something for the family -- if you don't want to spend money, you can always just send a card expressing your condolences--I'm sure he would appreciate that

i have no problem spending money on something like this... i couldnt even imagine losing my mother right now... i like the idea of a sympathy card and flowers... i will talk to josh about it... thats what I was thinking but it was too late to send last night when we found out.

He might ask you to go to the wake with him, I would go, but thats just my culture-you go to a friend of a friends wake. Ya know?
A mass card would be something to do also. If not, send a sympathy card-I think his friend will really appreciate that.

I would definatley send a sympathy card also I know when my grandmother passed away people sent food. I know it sounds weird but usually after the funeral and the wake people go back to the house. It's to chaotic to cook for everyone so sending a basket of fruit isn't a bad idea. Also see I know my friend asked people to donate money to a charity in lieu of flowers.

I would go to the wake if their having one for a short time. Usually theres at least 2 viewings, the first time slot is usually kept for family and close family friends the 2nd or nighttime slot is when not so close friends, co-workers, neighbors and anyone else is appropriate to go. I usually wait about 30 mins after it starts to go, and only stay about 30 mins. Pay your respects and then excuse yourself. Thats my rule of thumb at least.
