I booked Westbury Manor and they were great with negotiating!!! One thing that you could say is that You've looked at such and such hall and that they are offering some extras for the price...you can also say that the price range is not in your budget and you were looking more into that other place's prices better...sometimes saying these things help bringing the price down!!! trust me on this one i thought it was impossible but it worked for me!! Also sound like you know what you are talking about when it comes to pricing don't question too much because that's when they take advantage...good luck on choosing the perfect place :)

Tell them flat out the price is too high. See if they can add some stuff in. If you're really serious about booking a hall, tell them you are, you're just worried about the price/whats included.

Re: Negotiate??

When I first went to CLM I was told we could 'work out' my budget and we can negotiate a bit. Well I traveled out there a second time for a tasting, went really well since their food is fantastic..
Came time to sit down and talk the big $$. Would not budge on price. They kept telling me that no one else would give us what they are at the price they qouted me ($90/pp before tax & grat), which I have found to be so not true.
Then they tried to tell me that for $5 more /pp they would be able to 'throw in the chocolate fountain'. By throw in you mean charge me an extra $500 almost? It would only be saving me $200 if I were to take the $90/pp and pay for the fountain extra.. they REALLY tried to convince me it was a steal.

I loved the place but in the end felt there were other places offering me a lot more for that kind of money. I'm on a budget as it is, I just felt like they made every effort to get more money out of me and would not negotiate at all.

They tried to give me the downstairs too.. I don't even know how I'd get 150 people. We are only inviting about 125.
I don't know your budget or where you're traveling from, but another waterfront place is Sans Souci in Sea Cliff on the North Shore. I went there last week and again yesterday to show FH. They have 3 menus starting at $70/pp I believe, and they are good if you are having a small wedding since their room only hold 200 tops. They are also 1 wedding at a time, lots of places on property and down the road to take photos graphs (there's like 5 parks in the area over looking the bay). They also inlcude your center pieces which is a plus in my book.
if you want to check it out, http://www.sanssoucicaterers.com/

And I tell you, talking with them is so much easier. I always get my BM when I call. When I was calling CLM I was constantly leaving messages for a call back (sometimes he wouldn't call me back and I'd call again after 4 days of hearing nothing).
But CLM has delicious food.

What exactly are you looking to spend?

Re: Negotiate??

I think it depends a lot on the hall. Some places are willing to negotiate if you're serious, some are EXPECTING to negotiate and go in with a high number expecting to bring it down to 'win you over,' and some just absolutely will not budge on anything. I was kind of able to tell by how receptive they were to questions about substituting things out of the menu to reduce the price (things we wouldn't have wanted anyway), and/or how serious they were in their presentation and how approachable they seemed. Also, the sooner your wedding is the more they will work with you, and the less popular seasons also allow for more negotiation.

I brought my mom' boyfriend who is just like that. He's one to say whatever he thinks and he's a good negotiater.... but even he couldn't get CLM to budge. I need a place that will work with me, negotiate on things, take my calls when I need to talk to the BM etc... so CLM wasn't working for me.

No matter how good some people are at opening their mouths some places won't budge.

honestly, SC's prices are so low (as compared to toher places) that IMO, it would kinda like a slap in the face to them to try to bargain so i totally understand why they wouldnt budge

We both live in the same area according to what you posted in the group walks, it's like maybe 20-25 minute ride. Sea Cliff is just by Roslyn. Sans Souci is about 10 minutes from Swan Club actually. You got any questions or anything feel free to FM me :)

Re: Negotiate??

you know, i got tired of the BS from all these BM so i started to flat out ask: 'can we do better than this price?' Maybe from being abrupt about it it worked. i think only once i was told no
