Re: can someone help me find an article?- the one about children under 18 without a guest
This is from Emily Post...
(it does not specifically address dates for 16 year olds, but it does say guests should not add on a guest).
Respect your invitation. Do not ask your host or hostess if you can bring a date or your children. The invitation will be addressed to the people invited. If you may bring a guest, your invitation will read “Mr. John Phelps and guest.” If your children are invited, they will either receive their own personal invitations or their names will be listed under yours on the envelope. This is not the time to question your host’s decision, to argue or to beg for an exception. And, please, do not add their names to a reply card!

Re: can someone help me find an article?- the one about children under 18 without a guest
I've done some searching for you, but I can't find anything specific. What I did find was that you don't have to invite a single guest with a 'plus one' unless they are married, engaged or living together. And that it is also impolite for a guest to ask if they can bring a date when it is not indicated that they are invited with one. I have also read that over 18 gets a separate invitation, but under is still included with the family.
But that aside, I think that a 16 year old cousin is still a 'child' and does not have to be invited with a 'friend.' I am irritated that your aunt is being this rude. I'm going to search some more for you. If I find something better (that will help your case), I'll let you know.
Good luck

tell your aunt she has nerve asking to bring her child's g/f - i know i read somewhere that minors dont receive guests as they are considered part of their parents invite and not on one of their own - will look in the books i have to see if i can find the exact wording. but it is your wedding and dont invite anyone you dont want to - stand up for yourself - if you dont want her there just say no

That is insane. We gave only people over 18 dates.

I hear you. We are having at least 16-20 children at our wedding. (That's under 12 years old) In FH's family they don't just invite the cousin, they invite the cousin's children too. I like children, but I was thinking neices, nephews, first cousins. I can't say that I'm trilled, but I've come to terms with it.
