We've finally finished hanging our new interior doors-YAY!! The doors are pine, unfinished. Now we're on to the trim.
I'd really like to stain the doors a warmer, deeper tone...then add stained trim.
I'm having trouble bringing the whole project together!!
For instance, the existing floor molding is white. I'm thinking that we should replace it all with molding that will match the doors/trim (stained wood). Opinions??
We recently purchased a new dining room table-finish is a cherry/mahogany reddish brownish tone. Would it make sense to stain the doors, trim and molding to match??
Note-we are in a hi-ranch, so living room, dining room and kitchen flow into each other. I'll probably keep white trim in the kitchen (to match the cabinets).
Anyone with stained wood doors? How did you finish/trim them??
Am I overthinking this???
Help!

Re: New doors-trim, molding, etc...
In two weeks we are going to be replacing the interior doors (4 - same thing unfinished - smooth doors) and base molding (rope design) in our master bedroom. We were going to do crown molding by recently decided not to. We are going to do casement modling around the doors to match the base molding. We are painting our doors and molding white.
I like the idea of staining it a close color to the furniture. Sounds nice. If you are doing the door that color - I would think about doing the moldings as well..I would have to see pictures of what it looked like white...hmm..understand you dilemma now. I originally thought about doing all my moldings in a dark brown/burgundy paint color - then I didn't know what the door would look like if I left it white...so now we are doing all white.
Guess I was no help, huh?

Re: New doors-trim, molding, etc...
Niecey, you are a help! Thanks!
It sounds like you are going through the same sort of projects as we are-and your train of thought is similar to mine.
The rope molding and casements sound nice...
Back to the drawing board for me
P.S. Thanks for the Jem Weld recommend a few weeks ago. We ended up buying Premidor (sp?) doors-just a basic Home Depot 6 panel solid pine. Good luck with the door hanging! It's not a complicated job, especially if you bought the doors pre-hung. Definitely a two (wo)man job...the extra hands makes the job much easier.

Re: New doors-trim, molding, etc...
Thanks - so you went with solid doors, huh? Do you mind if I ask you the approximate price per door (you can FM me if you like)?
The only doors that we saw in home depot were Masonite, not solid and grain. I think we are using a lumbar yard for door with no grain but I don't believe they are solid....that whole thing really threw us for a loop. We are actually getting someone to hang our doors - since he will be doing the base molding as well. We are suppose to buy all the equipment this weekend.
Good Luck with your project!

Re: New doors-trim, molding, etc...
My parents replaced their doors and stained them and they did all the moldings (around the doors and on the floor) in the same stain. They have a Hi Ranch also so the molding on the floor goes trhoughout the hallway up to the kitchen. the kitchen modling is different (if they even have any - mostly cabinets) and the LR and DR are the same wood stained moldings also.

Re: New doors-trim, molding, etc...
Niecey, the doors we bought from HD are made by Masonite (Premdor must be one of their models), but the doors are not made of masonite particle board.
Here's Masonite's website-lots of beautiful doors.
The 30' wide, 6 panel doors were about $ 125. The narrower closet doors were $ 90 ish. With a contractor, you'll probably get a better price.
The doors are solid pine with veneered stiles. They came pre-hung, which makes the job much easier. They definitely have a wood grain.
I can't believe how I've become so involved in doors...LOL...
Does this help?
Good luck, and remember to have fun with it all! Let us know how it goes!
ETA: Kerry, thanks for replying. It sounds like your parents did exactly what I'm thinking of. Thanks for the encouragement!
