Wanna help me girls? I need to make a list of all of the things FH & I will need when we move in to our new apartment...sans registry items. (cleaning supplies, bathroom things...etc etc..)
I'll start with what I have on my mind...follow suit and this could be a decent list for all.

Lots of medicine for bathroom - tylenol, motrin, allergy pills, bandaids, neosporin - stuff like that.
For kitchen, I don't know if you have a spice rack on your registry but if you don't it can take quite a bit of money to buy everything you'll need
Paper towels, tissues, napkins - those are all necessities.
OH! A plunger! You won't know you need one until you do need one and then look out if you don't have one! I also like to keep draino around just in case. And baking soda for the fridge.

Re: New Home Checklist
Here is my advice to you:
Go to target and just walk the aisles. There are so many things that you need that you will not realize.
Before moving anything into the apartment you should bring the following there:
-a vacuum -a mop -windex -paper towels -toilet paper -plunger -toliet brush -bleach! -all purpose cleaner -garbage bags -new toilet seat cover -shower liner
Clean the apartment very well before you move in. The floors don't have to shine but you want them clean before you move your stuff in.

Re: New Home Checklist
Great idea!!! I notebooked this for when FH and I move in together this summer
Also, re: spice racks...I saw one at Costco for a very affordable price...I forget how much but I made a mental note to go there when we are ready to move
Its a good idea to go there for many of these things, medicine, cleaning supplies, etc. You'll probably need them a lot at the beginning so might as well buy in bulk!

Re: New Home Checklist
Here is my advice.....I have been in my own apt since 1996. ANd have moved a million and one times since then.
Do not buy all this stuff ahead of time. Get the basic cleaning stuff so you are able to clean before you move in. Make sure you have stuff for the bathroom (shower curtain, towels, soap, TOILET PAPER, and shampoo, etc)
All the other stuff....wait til you are in.....once you are in you will realize there are a million things you need and each place will be different so one list does not fit all. The first week you will be making trips to home depot, target, wal-mart, BBB. If you try to do it all before you will end up with a bunch of things you dont need and will have to do returns.
**** I just read plunger on soemones list.....YES get this cause DH clogged our toilet the first day and he had to run out to Home Depot to buy one.

ITA!! That's why I gave you a list of what you need to bring to the apartment before you move in. Once you are in then go shopping. I have moved 20 times in my life...yes, 20! The less you have to bring with you the better.

Absolutely true! However, I would like to add two things that I needed within 5 minutes of moving in to my first apt. 15 years ago:
scissors and bandaids!

Re: New Home Checklist
I totally agree about waiting until your in to get stuff. The one thing that FH and I didn't get and didn't even think about until we needed them were flashlights!

Re: New Home Checklist
Thanks for all of the tips! FH & i are actually moving to Manorville...pretty much the middle of nowhere, so I'm trying to get as much as possible that I know we're going to need - cause the nearest Target is in Riverhead....

Re: New Home Checklist
The necessities only right away. As someone else said, you'll be going shopping almost every night for the first couple of weeks.
Toilet Paper!!!! Paper towels Paper plates and plastic utensils (you won't want to be cleaning dishes right away) Light bulbs Batteries Duct tape Garbage bags Tool kit Extension cords Bath towels shampoo conditioner toothpaste body wash / soap plunger cleaning supplies sponges rubber gloves a notebook - to write down things you don't have
