It was a while ago when I read it. But it was really good. A little strange, but definitely worth a read. And when you think he was only about 25 when that come out! WOW!!!

That's what makes me hesitate to pick up Foer's books. I got sucked into the whole Cult-of-David-Eggers a few years ago, and while, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius was very good, all of his follow-up novels, and his magazines painted him to be a really affected asshat. Eggers turned out to be way more into the criticism of the critcism (how meta ) and less into the craft of writing. And his writing devolved into a really self-concious, urban-hipster tone.

Is Foer a little more removed from his writing?

NOw that you mention, I do remember him being a little bit of a self-important weirdo in some interview or another...must be a side-effect of child-prodiginity.

that's so disappointing...kind of why I think I may be subconciously avoiding Zadie Smith's second novel...*sigh*

I get very nervous when it comes to young authors (i.e. younger than me!) because I wonder how much is writing and how much is preening.

Also, I'm insanely bitter and jealous that I don't have a book deal!

'Everything Is Illuminated' is incredibly funny, moving and wise. I would totally recommend it. I haven't read the new one yet, but I want to.
