I'm in CT visiting my sister and they offered some suggestions for doing my wedding on a budget (they were not too excited about Jamaica). Her father lives in a private community in Patchogue called Patchogue Shores. He said they have a nice community center that they can rent for $300 for my wedding. It's right in front of a private beach, where they said I can set up my ceremony. You can see pics of it onhttp://www it's the community house.
She also said she would be willing to have it at her house. We could set up a tent on her property, it's huge. I don't know about this because it's in CT. Most of our guests would be coming from Queens, the Bronx and MA.
The other suggestion is a military hall. My brother in law is in the military. He just got back from Iraq this week He said he could sign out the hall for us. I have no idea what our options are though for military halls in NY. If anyone knows of any I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!!!

Re: New low budget wedding options
hi! we had our reception at a community center in NJ... it was the community center for a condo complex, and it was beautiful- right on the delaware river, with a wall of windows looking out at the water and a nice deck for people to go out on.... everyone LOVED it because it was such a unique location- not the typical 'wedding factory' hall that everybody else does.. we still get compliments on how nice it was. the place provided tables and chairs, and we found a caterer that brought in everything else ( plates, glasses, food, bartender). we had to buy our own alcohol, but it really worked out well becasue we could return any unopened bottles and some of our money back, so we saved money that way... and we got to keep any unfinished bottles, so its a nice start to the liquor cabinet for our house i would definitley recommende looking into the community center- it sounds beautiful! having it at the house is a great idea, too... but look into it becasue you might end up spending more by the time you rent tents, tables and chairs, and think about bathroom facilities- can you have all those people using the bathrooms at the house, or would you have to rent port-a-johns, and would you be able to handle if there was bad weather? my parents have a 14 acre farm and we almost had it there, but by the time we thought about all of thise, we decided it wans't worth it...

Yeah, I'm really leaning toward the community center idea too. I love that I would be able to have my ceremony on the beach! The community center is also right off of the beach with a little deck in back. She also said there is a canopy covered area about 10 feet off th beach that would be nice too. I'm also happy because that means I could also afford to have my wedding on a Saturday night at no extra charge. I realized I don't need a big fancy wedding. Just something simple but nice. All that's really important will be that I'm married to the man of my dreams at the end of the day

Re: New low budget wedding options
If you like the CT idea , don't worry too much about guests. On the flip side, we had Many guests coming from CT since that is where we live and our friends are-and DHs family/friends are- the wedding was on LI-out east- those who wanted to come came- I have to say that all the friends came- but not all of dhs family friends came- honestly, they probably would not have come unless it was in THEIR backyard- BUT back to the topic- those who want to travel to see you get married and celebrate with you WILL , dont stress about the ones who don't want to-too bad for them!

The community center sounds great!
I would do some research into the tented wedding idea. A tented wedding at someone's house is likely to cost as much if not more than a typical LI wedding -- there are several threads on here if you do a search.

Re: New low budget wedding options
avoid the tent thing.... originally, FH and I wanted our reception at mom's house. she has a huge home and yard. Pitching a tent and renting the tables / chairs / plates / linens.... not only is it a huge amount of work, but I discovered it costs more than $60/pp!!!! and that's BEFORE catering and booze! In the end, it costs MORE than a reasonably priced hall!
The community center idea is great.... do they have tables and chairs? If they do, you'll have minimal rental costs.... and it will be a very personalized event! go for it!

Re: New low budget wedding options
love the community center idea! it could be really beautiful with the beach and everything. and it wouldn't be all that hard for your NY relatives to get up there. they can all car pool and jump right onto the CIP, go over the Throggs Neck and up 95 (my grandmother lived on the CT shore, and it was a very easy drive for us coming from Huntington). It would also be easy for any relatives you have elsewhere in New England. Do some research on both options, but I would bet that's the better way to go.
There are several other brides on the boards that are getting married in CT or live there, so there are people here to help you with vendors and ideas!
Good luck!

I would do the community center. You can set it up really beautiful. I was going to do a destination wedding also, but it was just to hard and would have ended up costing the same as having it here on a budget. I say go for it, Good luck!

The community center sounds like a great idea!!!!!! I'd like to let you know about pavilions at Rye Town Park too. (Right near Playland) We rented a pavilion for our engagement party and had it catered by Ann Clairs in the Bronx. (Yes, they delivered all the way up there.) The park people set up the tables and chairs and deal with the clean up too! It's right on the water and is a great looking place!! While we were there, the other pavilion had a wedding going on and they were dancing the night away!! You don't need to live in that county to rent it. We had 60 people and it cost us $1000 for everything!! It's outdoors, yet fully covered.
Also, if you're interested in a new wedding gown on budget, check out my review for where I got mine!!! Many new gowns are there for under $150!!!!

Re: New low budget wedding options
I live in Patchogue, and I know where that community center is because my sister used to live in Patchogue Shores. I actually always wanted to get married there also....because it has a large property, and a cute little beach on the water. I have been to a 50th b-day party there, and the inside was okay...decorated nicely it would have been nicer. I didn't end up going that way....but I still think it is a great idea. Now I am second guessing my choice....LOL. Whenever I told people my idea, they laughed at me, but I think you should do it!!

yup! exactly! like i said, ours was at a community center of a condo complex and it was wonderful! a few months later our friends had the $40 K wedding at a super nice hall in NJ... orchid centerpeices, photo montage, the whole nie yards.... BUT friends who were at both of the weddings said they liked ours better because it was more laid back, simple, and less of a 'show'.... and we're still just as married as the friends who had the $40 K wedding do what you want... it will be beautiful no matter what!!

Re: New low budget wedding options
The community center sounds great--check it out, see what it's like. I'd be careful about the tented one though. Tents are NOT cheap, and you have to rent everything, so it runs into a lot of money, and it's a huge amount of work for you. That may even be true of the community center. Before you book it, figure out what you'll need to bring in, and how much it will cost. It might be more money than having it at a typical wedding hall. We had thought along those lines too, before we realized that it's actually cheaper in many cases to go with a wedding hall, as you're not renting everythign from dishes to tables to linens and lights and chairs, etc.
