New World Trade Center Plan

NEW YORK (AP) -- A complex of angular buildings and a 1,776-foot spire designed by architect Daniel Libeskind was chosen as the plan for the World Trade Center site on Wednesday, The Associated Press has learned.

Libeskind's design beat the THINK team's 'World Cultural Center' plan, which envisioned two 1,665-foot latticework towers straddling the footprints of the original towers.

The new building is planned to be taller than the trade center towers, which briefly stood as the world's tallest at 1,350 feet. Libeskind's tower also would surpass Malaysia's 1,483-foot Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest buildings in the world.

The choice was made by a committee with representatives of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the governor and the mayor. The committee met briefly on Wednesday afternoon and decided on the plan that was favored by Gov. George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to a source close to the process.

LMDC Chairman John Whitehead telephoned Libeskind with the news, the source said, telling the architect that his 'vision has brought hope and inspiration to a city still recovering from a terrible tragedy.'

Libeskind told the chairman that being selected is 'a life-changing experience,' the source said.

Nine proposals for redeveloping the trade center site, where nearly 2,800 people died September 11, 2001, were unveiled December 18. The design competition was launched after an initial set of plans, released in July, was derided as boring and overstuffed with office space.

Redevelopment officials were scheduled to announce the decision publicly Thursday.

After the two plans were chosen as finalists earlier this month, both teams of architects were asked to revise their designs to make them more easily realized.

Libeskind, whose original design called for a memorial at the trade center foundation 70-feet below ground, reportedly changed that to 30 feet, allowing for infrastructure and transportation underneath.

The LMDC was created by Pataki and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani after September 11 to oversee the rebuilding of the trade center site and downtown Manhattan. The Port Authority owns the site.

The designer has it so from the time that the first plane hit (8:46am) to the time the second tower fell (10something) the area in the center will constantly be illuminated with light.

I don't think I'll like anything but what was there.

They can put anything they want there, I still can't look at that spot without a lump in my throat.

I have the same feeling as Mistyeyed. It just wouldnt be the same.

Whats really scary is a friend of Brian and I's (a guy that we know and we ride with) lost his sister in the attacks in 1993 and my family lost a very close family friend in 9/11. So it really hits me hard about anything with the WTC.

That area will just never be the same

I don't care for how it looks to be honest....I feel that is sacred ground and should be left alone...jmho.

I was there that day, but i still believe that they should rebuild the towers the way they were!

I dont like the new plan. It looks too geometric or something. Too sharp and pointy. I do like how they are leaving the original wall though.

I agree. I don't like the new plans. UGLY. Totally don't fit in with the skyline. How can you have those towers with the Empire State Building in the same skyline???

The area now is completely devastated. It looks like a giant construction site. Its very eery every time i walk pass it. I still cry.

I think they should do a nice memorial thing. trees with plaques of those that are gone, benches, a nice playground, a definate memorial wall. maybe make a museum of some sort.

I get very emotional and touchy about anything with that site. Every time i walk down church street it makes me angry, sad, i cry, i get mean, i basically get filled with a million emotions.

nothing can replace what was there, but we cant forget it happened. I think a basic memorial would be just fine.

We will all grieve about this many different ways for many years to come...

IMHO...I think its a perfect plan...NYC needs to use the space

1776 ft...for our independence
8:46-10:28 there will be no shadows cast
highest building in the world (by a long shot) that we will not be beaten...
BOTH fooprints will be left vacant (the 5 other towers are enough to provide all the office space)

Re: New World Trade Center Plan

The architect was the head of the department at my graduate school when I was there. At the time, some of us in other departments thought it was kind of strange that the head of the architecture department had not had any of his designs actually built Glad to see from his bio that that has changed over the years, although I see he's described as a 'deconstructivist architect' - what the heck is that
