Newlywed - Car insurance problem

Newlywed - Car insurance problem

I have a perfect driving record but my new husband has an old dui from 8 years ago and a speeding ticket that he paid late...they are saying his license is revoked but he is working on getting it back. I am changing my name to his - started the process today - and was just going to change my name on my insurance. I wasn't planning on having him associated at all with my insurance company - we were keeping everything separate...but my agent says if he changes my name, just the fact that I am married to him, my insurance company may drop me! I can't believe it! My record is perfect, and now just by marrying my husband, it means nothing! Has anyone else ever gone through this?? I don't know what to do - I am so upset.

sorta kinda the same....whenever the insurance company finds out someone is living int he same house of you, they ususally ask for coverage for them.

I would recm'd keeping your insurance as is, not notifying them that you're married.

I agree with Chris. I haven't notified my car insurance company of my name change yet either. I would wait until your DH has a clean license/driving record again before you make the change.

I already went to DMV and changed my name on the license and registration today...won't they find out?

Nope.

Oh, I thought that DMV notifies them though, no?

What about when I go to renew? Do I just use my old name - even thought everything else will be in my new name? I am sooo confused!

Thanks for your quick responses! I am so frustrated by this!

When I went to DMV to change my license, they said that when I change my title and registration name, it's much better to change your name with your insurance company first otherwise it will be hard for some reason... I tried to change it with Geico but then they made me put my DH on it.. I was afraid the rates would go up having him as a driver, but they stayed the same

I agree. For years I technically didn't have any car insurance for a very simple reason: i didn't own a car. i kept my license and even transferred it from NC to NY with no questions asked about insurance.
