DH & I are considering switching to Nextel because of their Direct Connect feature. It's mostly because we had difficulty connecting with our cell phones during the black out.
Can anyone tell me their experience with nextel during the black out? How easy was it to get through to people?

DH had nextel...and I loved the direct connect feature...
I would get one in a sec...if monthly fees weren't so bad...but I don't know about the blackout...sorry

We have had Nextel for 5 years. My BIL worked in the WTC and it was the only reason we knew he was alive for hours. Matt and his brother spoke over the radio and made arrangements to meet. Matt then spoke to me and I was lucky enough to give the good news to the rest of the family. It also worked during the blackout this summer.
I love Nextel!

We had just switched to Nextel 2 weeks before the blackout. Unfortunately it wasn't working for me at all, pretty much until Friday afternoon.
We switched because of the Direct Connect feature, but it is hard to get used to. And if DH is on the phone it just says User Not Available and I can't leave him a message or VM - I have to call him anyway.
I wasn't happy with Sprint, but switching to Nextel is taking a lot longer to get used to than I thought it would. But that's just my experience and my preferences...

I was able to speak to my friend in Arizona from my nextel during the BO, but to no one here

Thanks for the feedback.
We heard that direct connect will work when regular and cell phones don't so we are looking into it as a just in case since we carry cell phones anyway. 50/50 seems to be the results here.
Anyone else have any experience with nextel, during the black out or 9/11???

Verizon has Direct Connect now too.
FI uses Nextel for work, but then he has verizon as his personal phone.
Nextel is coming out with a new phone this month I believe. They are one of our clients and are promoting it BIG TIME! It is aparently much smaller than the other ones.

I am not sure. I have verizon. They aren't my client. I just asked the rep who covers them and he said, 'Not sure exactly, but all of their phones are expensive, so I am assuming around $400.' He says it comes out at the end of October. Maybe you can call and see how much it will be??

Yeah, it looks much smaller than their other phones. FI has the I95 I think? The thing is tremendous!

I know it just came out. I don't think many people have it yet because you have to buy the phone with the direct connect capabilities. I want it though!! I am going to wait a few months though so I am not the only one with it. I wouldn't be able to connect to anyone than..lol
I think it is dumb that I woudln't be able to direct connect a nextel subscriber from a verizon phone. It should all be on one wave in my opinion....

I think so too! It's like saying you can't call Sprint customers with your AT&T phone.
