Nice areas less than 2 hours from the city?

My fiance works in the city so we are trying to stay close. Does anyone know of any nice areas close to Manhatten but not ridiculously priced?

Re: Nice areas less than 2 hours from the city?

it depends on what you are looking for....

you can buy a 2 bedroom co-op around bayside queens for about $250-$275, I believe its only a 25 min train ride to penn.

westchester and rockland (upstate ny) are $$$ (just as expensive as LI)

not sure of NJ.....

are you looking to buy or rent?

Re: Nice areas less than 2 hours from the city?

Orange and Putnam counties (upstate NY) are probably about 2 hours from the city in some places and are suburban/rural.

or central/southern NJ.

Re: Nice areas less than 2 hours from the city?

We are in Bedminster (Somerset County), NJ and just bought our townhome this past October. There are townhomes here that range from 300-600k depending upon what you are looking for. The commute by bus one way is an hour and a half. It can be longer with traffic. On a weekday, to drive into the city during rush hour it takes about an hour and 45 minutes, but on a weekend or middle of the day weekday it is only a 45 minute drive to the city. I think our area is rural (there are cows nearby, we have bunnies that run through our back yard, and deers that roam), but there is also a large mall 5 miles away.

I am in Manorville and it is about 2 hours from the city. We have a 2 bedroom townhouse and it is going for $349K.

Re: Nice areas less than 2 hours from the city?

If you are willing to commute for two hours - check into some areas in PA right over the border from NJ - a lot of people commute from there, and its very rural - and priced very nice. I tried to convince my husband to move there but he works for the city so we couldn't.

Re: Nice areas less than 2 hours from the city?

Southern Dutchess County!!!

Hopewell Junction- CNN Money Mag 31th best place to live in the US. Aprox 1hour 15 mins to NYC. We LOVE it up here.

Lot's of new construction and older homes that are still very reasonable. Do a search on Prudential Serles , that's the big real estate group up here.
