Nicolas has a cold!

Nicolas has a cold!

He was snoring all night and seems stuffy, but luckily he has no temperature.

I called the dr. who told me to use a vaporizer and saline nose drops. How in the world am I going to get nose drops into his tiny little nose?!

Have you had to use the boogie extractor yet? I hate that thing!! That's a job for daddy!

Oh God, it seems little Nicky is following in Gianna's footsteps!! She had a cold at 3 weeks also (she was snoring too, how cute is that?). It's easy, just take the bottle and very carefully put it in the nose and squirt real fast! Then pick him up because Gianna starts gagging on it and crying at the same time!!! (Of course, Joe cannot be in the room when I do that and the syringe!!! )

I know it's hard to do on their little noses, but you can do it!!!! Give that gorgeous little Lima Bean a !!! I hope he's feeling better!!!

As for the vaporizer -- I used it, but it wasn't working that well, so I switched to the humidifier and she was breathing much better with it. Also, put a blanket under the mattress to prop his head up a bit -- but not too much where he slides down. If you find that he's really having a hard time breathing through his nose, let him sleep in the bouncy. Or sit in the bathroom with the hot water running and let it get all steamy -- that worked really well also!!

Thanks for the advice! Deb, how long did it take Gianna to feel better?

Kathi, we were told to use the boogie extractor (loving that name for it, BTW) after we put the nose drops in, and it WAS NOT fun!!!!

Re: Nicolas has a cold!

Jen, she was congested for about a week (but then again my house is the hot house and you can't breathe with the damn heat that suffocates you). It just hard for us to listen to them trying to breathe!! Gianna was snorting this morning and now she coughs (which is the cutest thing ), so I'm hoping she's not getting another one!

I hope Nicolas feels better (and I'm going to apologize in advance if I ever spell his name with an 'h' by accident, because I'm soooo used to spelling my nephew's name, it's automatic )!!!!!!!!!

AWE Poor little Nicolas!

I WOULD LOVVVEEE to give saline nosedrops to a newborn again!

WAIT till you have to give nosedrops to a FEISTY, WILD, TANTRUM-THROWING, BACK-ARCHING, HANds-in the way, turning his head, BITING and STRONGGGG 14m OLD !!!

Deb gave you the good ol fashion advice, that I wish I would have just done and saved myself the trip to the Dr a few weeks ago
Even the cold air was suggested to us (Both the hot shower and the cold outside air) but Im not sure if thats good for a teenie newborn, and its a little colder now than it was a few weeks ago. But it really worked for clearing up his cough.

This time of year stinks (Jen how do you do it at work, with all the little runny noses this time of year?)

JA got better last week, and now the past 2 days has been runny-nose and little coughing again

We'll get these little ones better

Re: Nicolas has a cold!

Awe, poor little guy! It sounds like it might not be a cold, but rather just seasonal congestion from the heat and dryness of the house (we have all had it here too, and I thought we were sick, but we all feel fine!)

Definitely run the humidifier ALL day long...we were only running it at night, and it wasn't helping much. But, since yesterday it's been on around the clock, and is definitely making a difference!

That totally stinks. I hope he feels better soon.

I know they make a baby saline nose spray so maybe that spayer is small enough for a tiny nose.

Re: Nicolas has a cold!

What 's the difference between a vaporizer and a humidifier?? We have a vaporizer but no humidifier... should I get one??

Oh Clueless One, I'm LMAO right now!!! Thank you for that!!!

Let's see if the other Clueless One can explain it to you

The vaporizer is the thing you put that Vick's stuff in and the humidifier just has water in it -- it blows cold air if you have a cold mist humidifier and hot air if you have the opposite. The cool mist one is to take the humidity out of a room. (I really don't think I'm describing this very well). Does this help?

Here's my other terminology -- the humidifier helps clear my nose and the vaporizer I use when I have a really bad cold or bronchitis for the Vicks smell.

Deb, you are SO FUNNY! Actually, cool mist PUTS the humidity into the room, the same way a warm mist humidifier does...it's just cool instead of warm.

To me, the only time you need warm mist IS when you are sick...so, if you're just looking to get some moisture in the air (from the heat in your house), go with a cool mist humidifier. We bought the UltraSonic one b/c it's SUPER quiet and won't disturb your (or the baby's) sleep!

Re: Nicolas has a cold!

Okay, my vaporizer is blowing out warm steam. Does this mean it's serving no purpose??

Re: Nicolas has a cold!

No, No, No! It doesn't mean it's serving NO purpose....it just means it's adding warm, moist air to your house instead of just plain moist air. It's not a bad thing at all, especially since it's so COLD outside.

ETA: just make sure that the humidifier is placed on a moisture resistant surface....and check it often to be sure that moisture isn't collecting on surrounding surfaces...you don't want your carpets/furniture to be damp...then you'll start to grow mold
