I'm not sure how they figure it - but I do remember with my son I only had 2 sonograms, the first one at 8 weeks and then the 20 week one.

You may be able to request another. I had one at 28 weeks and they just did another at 35 weeks and told me it may not be my last. My doc does a lot of them.

I am having another this Tuesday since my fluid level was low.

I do think they can feel your belly and know what position the baby is in.

Is it head down now?

yes the baby is head down- I guess thats why? I asked her and she said that maybe we can think of an exuse to have another I just dont see why normally they dont do it. She said my uterus is measuring perfectly- whatever that means. I just find it weird that they just feel around and say- oh your baby is 7lbs or whatever- I though that they would have to take a sonagram to know.

I had only one sono during my pregnancy and that was at 16 weeks. My doc only did one routine one and others only if necessary. A lot of times the doctors are off when they estimate weight by sonograms anyway.

The size of the baby doesn't really matter as long as everything has been fine up till now. Sonogram weight estimates can be off and can also scare women.

true.

The day of my delivery my dr felt my belly and gave her guess of the weight - - she was off only by 2oz....although my sonos always seemed on target to get to that weight.

My doctor does another sonogram at 36 weeks for all mommies to be. I will be having one at each of my remaining appointments (I'm 34 1/2 weeks) due to my age, as well as the fetal stress test at every appointment.

When they measure you, you should be one centimeter for each week of your pregnancy (from the bottom of the uterus to the top) and they consider that measuring to size.
