Let me preface this by saying I am something of a reluctant bride. I was never big into the whole wedding thing, can't say 'I've been dreaming of this day since I was little', it's just not my personality. I really wanted to elope, or go to the JOP, but FI really wanted the tradtional wedding, so here I am!
I know this is going to sound terrible, but I've never been a big fan of showers. I find them kinda dull (sorry!). And I'm ashamed to admit, I usually just send a gift! My MOH, knowing how I feel, has asked me if I want a shower or not. She says she'd love to plan it, but will skip it if I prefer. Honestly, I kinda like the idea of not having a shower, as it's really not my thing. The gift issue doesn't sway me at all. I've been living on my own for 10+ years, and I have pretty much everything I need.
So my question is.... How strange would it be if I didn't have a shower? Should I just go along with it out of tradition? Am I really really weird?!
I do not like the shower idea either...and hated being there...but there were more issues involved...
If you don't mind not getting gifts and your family isn't big on it (my moms side would all have heart attacks if someone didn't have a shower) then don't have it...
OR
have it planned in a restaurant...buffet/finger foods...for only 2 hours...
that way its not too long...

Re: No shower? Opinions please....
I agree they can be boring. I hate them too, but I figured after all the showers I had to suffer through, Its my turn! I'm actually looking forward to mine. You can have a different type of shower, a bed and bath shower or cooking shower, or lingerie shower. Your family might want it for you, but dont do it if you dont want it. Nowadays people do what they want not always tradition.

Had one- but begged my MOH and my Mom to cancel it. I agree with everything you said. They also scheduled it on a day where 99% of my friends couldn't have been there because they scheduled it around MIL. I don't see anything wrong with it, but I must warn you my Mom was HYSTERICAL (and she normally is not a crier) when I didn't want one.
It's your wedding and your day, it should be about what you want.

I totally agree with you about showers - I dread going! I thought it would change after my own, and now I just feel bad that I made people come to mine.
If you don't want one, you shouldn't have one. I think the whole idea is for people who don't have anything for a home, but if you have everything you need, and don't want one, I don't see why you should have to. If people want to get you gifts, they will.

Thanks for your input everyone. I feel like such a bad bride! But it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's not in love with the idea of a shower! Dandj I would feel bad making people come to my shower too!
Thanks again - you guys are always so helpful!

My SIL didn't want one and carried on and on about having one, but it was a really nice party and it made her mother happy.
I have been told by a few people that even if you don't want a shower, you should appease your older relatives and let one be thrown in your honor. It is a few hours of a day and you get gifts and let the women bond. It won't kill you.
If you don't have many older relative or your mom wouldn't have a heart attack, then go without it.

I'm not having one!! ..or rather - i have told my MOH and brides and FMIL that I DO NOT want one and would appreciate it if they respect my wishes -
Gifts would trully help us out but I honestly dont like soliciting two gifts from people. The people that will get you gifts will get it for you regardless if tehre is a shower - We are inviting people to the wedding to celebrate us not give us a gift - if they do - great - I dont see that rationale with showers though - its a pure - come give me a gift and have 'fun' with me showing off all the gifts - i know i know kinda touchy and i dont mean to offend anyone -just the way i feel though -
We are still registering though - (1) so people can buy us gifts in lieu of money for the wedding (2) our family members can buy us x-mas and b-day gifts off the registry and (3) so we can get the 10% discount at the places
