Has anyone's ever heard of this. My MOH is getting married in the same chruch I am but she's getting married this Sept. She said she thought the priest said that candles are absolutly forbidden......including unity candle.
But I thought this was a catholic tradition.

Re: No unity candle allowed?
It's definitely not a traditional thing with the church. Someone was just telling me this the other day. It's optional, so I guess that means it's optional for the church to allow it. My mom was at a wedding once where the bride's dress went on fire with the candles. Can you imagine that?! But that's probably why.

Re: No unity candle allowed?
The unity candle is a secular tradition and is not part of a traditional Catholic Nuptial Mass or Ceremony. It is just one of those trend things that started about 30 years ago. Some priests allow it, some don't.

Re: No unity candle allowed?
Quite simply, it has no history or origin in catholic tradition. It is either secular or protestant, I'm not sure exactly, but wherever it came from it is not catholic.
Accordingly, it does not belong at a catholic wedding, at least not at the Liturgy.
----i found that online. somewhere else stated it was a protestant tradition...personally, i'd never seen it done until i attended a wedding at a 'non-denominational' church.

Re: No unity candle allowed?
I find that strange because every catholic wedding i have gone to here and in Ireland has always had the unity candle ceremony. It is symbolizing uniting your baptismal candles - i believe. I would def double check with the priest though.

That was my understanding of it also. But maybe I misunderstood. My MOH said she has a list of things to ask and that's one of them. She'll probably talk to the priest before I do, so when she gets an answer, I'll pass it on.
Thanks for all you help ladies!

Re: No unity candle allowed?
I went to one when the groom knocked the candle over... the expression on the priest's face was priceless!!!!!
I never thought to ask about the unity candle being allowed... it better be! I bought mine already! lol
