Noisy and Rude Neighbors - How do you deal with them?
We have a single mom and her teenage son living above us. Asides from her regular stomping in heels on parquet floor and the dog scouling (sp?); we now have the teenage son having 'band' practice in the appt, around 10-10:30 at night.
The first time they were too loud we knocked on the door and rang their bell to ask them to quiet down. They did.
The second time (last night) they wouldn't answer the door. We called police, who didn't come for 45 minutes, at which point there was no longer a need for them, b/c the noise has stopped. FH also heard the mom stomping down the staircase and asked her have her son and friends be a little quieter, but the woman yelled saying its not 10 pm yet (it was), well its not 11 pm yet, and proceeding down the stairs cursing, etc. FH just let her go, b/c she was rude and ununderstanding from the beginning.
What do we do next?

Can you call your landlord and have him write a letter stating the rules of the building regarding noise and the policy regarding how complaints are dealt with (i.e. eviction)?

T, we called last night. They told us someone will come, but nobody did for 45 mins, at which point the noise stopped. They didn't give me any special # for noise specific complaints.

I would call the police. I think there is a certain time frame or something that noise like that can't be made.

I would first try to speak to the mother again and let her know that the band practice is running past 10 pm and you need to get up in the morning for work. If reasoning with her does not work then tell your landlord. The police will do nothing but keep coming to the house and maybe write a summons. Try to solve this as friendly as possible because even though you are right the neighbors can make your life a living hell. Believe me I went through almost the same thing and I ended up moving. I also have noisy neighbors,,,but there's nothing they can do about it...they're building a 10,000 square foot house next door, and the construction has been going on for almost 2 years!
