Non cheesy DJs?

Non cheesy DJs?

My fiancee and I currently have a band booked, but we are curious about the various DJs out there. And are looking into them to see if we can cut costs a bit.

I find that many of them are super Long Island cheese - strobe lights, big mouthed mike hogs, bad 80's music, etc.

Has anyone found a DJ that can get the guests dancing all night without falling into the cheese factor? Do they send you samples of their tapes?

I want someone who will be tons of fun, but leave the limbo pole and air guitars at home. I've been to tons of weddings where these were given out - and they weddings were a drunken blast! - but it's not our style.

TIA,
willow

I went to a wedding at the Chateau Briand 2 weeks ago and they used Body Rock in Westbury. They had current music and everyone was dancing. I'm sure you could tell them no lights or gadgets. Hope it helps.

You can have the type of affair you want with pretty much any DJ all the extras - light show, smoke machine, giveaways are exactly that extra - you don't have to order that.

my DJ is excellent...not only did I use him for my wedding, but we have seen him DJ many times before (he is a friend of a friend) at friends' weddings, and every time he does a great job. He does not advertise, he pretty much is popular enough just through word of mouth. If you want his #, let me know.

If you are paying a DJ, you can be very clear on what you do and don't want. Be very specific, and ask lots of questions (as with any vendor). I also didn't want the 'cheesy' stuff, just someone who would play the music that we requested. So, we hired Jam Entertainment, and had the option of having a DJ and MC, but opted for only a DJ. Because we didn't want lights, smoke, etc, the cost was much less. The DJ was the MC, but only spoke for our entrance, first dance, cake cutting etc, but was quiet the rest of the time. Make sure you also have play/do not play lists. Good luck!

JC1977- If I remeber right the MC was medium built and had brown/blnde hair. His assitant was a really chubby guy with black hair.

Re: Curly2003-Chateau Briand

If you have not done so already, would you mind placing info on the board about your experience at the CB wedding? My wedding is there and I would love to hear your opinion-positive or negative. What room did they have? What center pieces were used? I am having a hard time trying to figure out what center pieces we should use.
Thanks!

Re: Non cheesy DJs?

I really liked our DJ, Eddie Terryn of Parameters. He was really helpful during our planning process, always taking time out to go over any concerns I had. He was definitely NOT heavy on the MCing, and he played fun music all night. He was very attentive all night long, totally aiming to please. He had a good sense of the music we wanted, and even handled the centerpiece giveaway amazing after I dumped a very vague idea on him at some point during appetizers or something. I had forgotten about discussing doing a centerpiece giveaway with him prior to our wedding, eventhough I had given it some thought!

No matter who you choose as your DJ, make sure they understand exactly what you want and don't want, and make sure you feel they're understanding and respecting your requests. One of the things we liked best about going with Eddie, was that we were dealing directly with the person who was working our wedding, and not having to rely on someone to get our message across to another person or persons. Eddie played the role of DJ and MC, and still kept everything flowing smoothly.

We know someone who used a DJ 'factory,' and they didn't get any of the music they requested, except for the major songs like 1st dance, etc. They never did meet their DJ or MC until the night of their wedding. I guess sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't .. just like anything else. The wedding was still lots of fun, and we enjoyed the music, but they wanted a completely different style than what was played.

Good Luck!!

(Eddie's number is on my profile).

I booked Body Rock for my 7/4/03 wedding. They did my friend's wedding and did a fabulous job. They played a good mix of music and the floor was pretty packed all night long.

I also heard very good things about Spin Around Sound.

CW0904-
I had a GREAT time at my friends wedding at the CB. The cocktail hour was just O.K though. Not too many choices but I think she cut back to have the Viennese hour in the end. Let me say that has been the BEST dessert hour I have ever seen. The food was good. I had the meat and FI had the Salmon. SHe had the upstairs room that holds like 350 people. Not the one where the floor comes up. The DJ kept things flowing very nicely. The only reason I did not pick the CB to get married is because even though I think the place is great I don't like the fact that it is so dark. Her receptin was very dark. All that mahogany wood effects the place. I think she knew this so her centerpieces were tall roses on a glass pedestal that layed on a square mirror with tea light candles. the fact that the candles reflected off of the mirror lightened things up a bit which was good. Hope this helps

Re: Non cheesy DJs?

The MC my friend had no longer works there. We booked Sergio. He's a little older than most of the other MCs we saw and the manager informed us that he would suit our needs, since we are having mostly an older crowd.
