Ok so I may be a little ahead of the game with this, but I need to find this information out before I book an officiant. Here's my question ~ if I am not married in a church or by a priest (my ceremony is at my RH) then I believe my marriage is not recognized as Catholic. I'm wondering if when we have children if we will still be able to baptize them even though out marriage is not considered valid in the church's eyes. (I heard you must be married in a church, obviously by a priest for your marriage to be considered valid by a church, as a Catholic. Will I still be able to have my children baptized if we are not considered a legal Catholic couple)????? HELP!!!!! I need to know this before I book an officiant. I don't want a religious ceremony but I do want my children to be able to be baptized. TIA

I'm curious about that too. I'm almost positive you can though since my mom is not religious at all and didn't get married in a church yet I was baptized as a baby.

My Mom is Jewish and my Dad is Catholic. They were married by a priest and rabbi. I was baptized in a church. The problem I'm concerned about is this ~ they were married by a priest, although not in a church. I have zero intentions of being married by a priest so if we are not married by a priest IDK if a church will recognize our marriage and baptize our children :(

As long as one of the parents is Catholic you can have your child baptized in the church. Your wedding has nothing to do with your child getting baptized. My FH and I were not married when our daughter was baptized and we had no problems getting her baptized.

I hate to tell you this but the catholic church in my small upstate town would not baptize my son. My ex-husband & I were not married in the church, I was his 2nd marriage and I am not catholic, so he told us no. The only way he would do it was for us to have his previous marriage annualled, me convert and get remarried in the catholic church. He said until all of that happen, my son did not exist in the eyes of god!!! I told him goodbye and when to the methodist church up the road!!!
I know all of the churches are different, that was just my experience them them and it wasn't a good one.

I have heard that some will baptize and some won't if you were not married in the church. It definitely depends on each parish and the priest.
