Non-Religious Ceremony

Non-Religious Ceremony

We are having our ceremony at our RH and a friend is performing the actual ceremony. We are not having any religion in the ceremony, except for FH breaking the glass at the end. We are looking for some nice poems or song lyrics for a few people (2?) to recite during the ceremony.

I am just worried the ceremony will be so short and uneventful, because I don't to do the sand or unity candle thing, I would probably light myself on fire, I'm so clumsy!

Anyway, I am sooo not into the super cheesy/romantic poems and I'm reading through some of these and like WHOA! I need something that's more me...any help would be mucho appreciated!

Go to this website:

Pastor April

She is officiating my ceremony and she has a ton of samples of ceremonies on her site. You can look at those. Also do a google search for wedding poems and readings and I am sure a ton of stuff will come up.

How Do I Love Thee?
by Elizabeth Barret Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

My True Love Hath My Heart and I Have His
by Sir Philip Sidney
My true love hath my heart and I have his.
By just exchange one for the other given.
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss,
There never was a better bargain driven.
My true love hath my heart and I have his.
His heart in me keeps me and him in one,
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides:
He loves my heart, for once it was his own,
I cherish his because in me it bides.
My true love hath my heart and I have his.

The vows I take will be forever
by Nicholas Gordon
The vows I take will be forever:
I'll love you all my life.
There's no part way, no holding back
Once we are man and wife.
The choice is made, and now I swim
In a far different sea,
The shores of which are bright green hills
Raised up for you and me.
Our love is like a mountainside
Awash in lovely flowers :
It is our home, our solid rock,
Where all bright things are ours.
And though of need we often must
Spend our days apart,
Our love will always be with us,
Held within the heart.
I feel it now, so strong and free,
So part of every breath
That it must live--I swear it will!--
Even after death.

Love is more...
by E. E. Cummings
love is more thicker than forget
more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail
it is most mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe
than all the sea which only
is deeper than the sea
love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive
it is more sane and sunly
and more it cannot die
than all the sky which only
is higher than the sky

Re: Non-Religious Ceremony

And this one I really love:

I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)
by E. E. Cummings
I carry your heart with me
(I carry it in my heart)
I am never without it
(anywhere I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
I fear no fate
(for you are my fate, my sweet)
I want no world
(for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
I carry your heart
(I carry it in my heart)

Re: Non-Religious Ceremony

We used a poem by Roy Croft called 'Love.' Everyone commented on how nice it was We also had our officiant do a hand ceremony instead of the unity candle or sand ceremony. It was very nice since you just hold your partner's hands and the officiant says very nice things like how 'these are the hands that will hold you...'
