Non-religious Premarital Counseling

FH and I are still undecided about what to do about officiants for our wedding so I'm not sure we'll have a pre-cana type of thing. Either way, though, I would really like to go to a session or two with a (private) premarital counselor. We're both products of divorce and while we have extended family members with long and happy marriages, neither of us grew up with a real role model as far as marriage goes. Has anyone done this with a counselor/therapist they recommend?

Also, as an aside, if you have had sessions, did your insurance cover it?

No, which is why we're in between about officiants (my family's Catholic, FH's is Jewish). Plus, I don't want the counseling session to be religion based at all.

Pre Cana has been the biggest waste of time for us. - but we are going in Manhattan and lots of people say they have good experiences. If you go - find out which parishes have a good program. They are very different from what I can see.
The program has little to do with religion though from what I've seen. It is about $100-$150 depending on what you do but I think it usually covers more than 1-2 pricate sessions would cover (2 hours each for 3 nights or so)
It depends on your insurance as to whether they cover it. When I had insurance (United Healthcare PPO)- they covered counseling for my FI and I.

I'm not really sure you will get a lot out of Pre-Cana but I also think 1-2 sessions with a privare therapist will be a waste - you need more time to really discuss issues. the first few sessions will be about the therapist getting to know you.

the precana isnt suppose to be about religion...... its suppose to bring up topics to see compatibility.... like finance matters, future children....they actually have a new thing called a FOCCUS test... its asks questions to whether you agree neutral or disagree on 100-150 questions, to show were there might be major differences...

I know for a fact Religious Premarital Counseling is best...you will get nothing but the word. And if you both are trying to walk the straight and narrow.Everything will add up...but be advise the bible says you will have trials and tribulation but be of good cheer....COMMUNICATION is the key!!!
GOD + Husband + Wife = HAPPINESS
