NonCatholics brides marrying a Catholic

does anyone know what the dispensation process consists of? Will it be a problem that we're not getting married in a Catholic church?

I think it means you have to write a letter to the church and make a donation in order for them to recognize the marriage if you get married outside the church.

It depends on the situation. Is it that your FI is Catholic and you want to have the ceremony in your church?

Yeps. FI's parents just starting freaking out after months of planning because they finally realized we didn't go through the process of getting it approved by his Catholic church yet.

I think you still have a good deal of time to get this ironed out if the date in your profile is accurate. Go and talk to a priest at his church. I think you also have to do Pre-Cana, as if you were getting married in his church in order for them to give you dispensation, but I am not 100%sure about that.

You do have to go to pre-cana as part of getting the dispensation.

You know it is your wedding and your marriage. If your inlaws are so insisting that you two have your marriage reconized by their church, let them find out all the info for you.

If you get the proper dispensation, it will not be a problem for your FI to remain as a Catholic in good standing. But to get the dispensation may be difficult if his reasons are not considered valid by the church.

For the issuing of a dispensation for a mixed marriage, the Church requires certain conditions; that the Catholic party be allowed free exercise of religion, that all the offspring are to be brought up Catholics, and maybe some others, I am not sure. However, even when these steps have been taken, it may not suffice for the issuance of a dispensation.

Your FI should go meet with his priest and start the processGood Luck and I hope everything works out for you!

Your FI needs to go meet with his priest and start the process immediately, if it is important to him. But I question why you are not marrying in the RC church to begin with? A Protestant doesn't 'give anything up' when they marry in the RC Church. The Protestant teachings leave out a lot of what Catholicism teaches. For a Catholic though, much is lost when going the other way. Good Luck and I hope everything works out for you!

We debated where we were going to get married for awhile, but ultimately decided that we would get married in my church since I grew up there (Although FI goes to mass every week, he moved around a lot growing up.). I think getting the dispensation is more important to his parents though and I felt kind of bad about not having a wedding in a Catholic church, so that's why we're going to start the process now. Hopefully, with his church recognizing the marriage, it'll make up for the fact that we're not getting married in a RC church.
