nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

OMG I wanted to die the other night when I got home from work, they were all over one wall in the kitchen!!!! We've never had a problem before and we've been in our house for almost 4 years now..... Good news is, it's not a terrible case, and my sister just had termites in her apartment and she gave us the guy she used as a referral. Bad news is.... of course, the PRICE!!!! I almost fell out of my chair, but as much as it stinks, it has to be done... It's just going to eat up most of our federal tax return to do it! I was so sad - I was hoping to put that money away for home renovation projects, but I understand this is a more pressing issue. Thankfully we got our return already, otherwise we wouldn't have to money to pay for this!! Ugh - I hate termites so much, I wanted to barf when I saw them - I felt so gross, like we were dirty or something!
Anyway, the guy came to our house last night and will be back on Monday for the treatment. Bye bye tax return, but I'd rather have a bug free house when it comes down to it! At least we don't have to dip ionto our savings to pay for it. If anyone needs a good pest control service, FM me and I'll let you know who we used. The guy is really nice and was extrememly thorough - but got extra brownie points with me bc he also has a Rottie!! He fell in love with Golem and couldn't stop petting him and saying what a good dog he was!

Don;t use Terminix, they are a HUGE ripoff. We have paid $750 for the treatment and follow-up. Terminix wanted double the price for half the treatment!!!

Re: nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

we're not using Terminix - the place my sister referred us to is actually a small family owned business, I think they're based in Bellmore.

If you don't mind me asking - what was your termite situation like - was it mild or crazy? We're spending a lot on this treatment, but there's a lot involved at the same time, so I think the price we got was very fair.

Re: nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

Actually, we had some damage on the workbench in the garage and discovered it last month when they are dormant. We aren't sure if they got into the house but just in case..... He drilled all around the house and put some chemicals in the ground. This keeps all the termites away. He also set up 4 traps around the house, which poisons the termites that get out and they bring the poisin back to the nest so that the whole nest is destroyed. He also treated all exposed wood surfaces in the basement. He will come every 2 months to check the traps and see what the situation is. We have a one year contract with option the renew every year for $200 or something like that...

Terminix wanted $1700 and all they do is set the traps, so they don't actually get rid of the whole nest, and termites can return.

We used Reliable Pest - located in Wantagh I think, also a family business. He was great...he played catch with my dog so I liked him!
We are so funny with our pets --- that's how I decide if I like someone or not!!

Re: nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

Thanks Kara, what you described is exactly what we are having done. It seems like so much money, but it's very extensive work and follow up, and we'll never have termites again, so that's priceless.

We are funny with our pets! I decided I wanted to use this guy bc he played with my dog as well!

I know, that's why I thought it was funny. I am the same way! If someone comes to my house for an estimate and they don't like my dog, they are OUT!!

That didn't count for the lady who wanted to buy my fridge that I paid $200 for and offered my $400, of course. I didn't care that she was scared to death of the dog, as long as she had the cash!!

Ughhhh...unfortunately I am joining this post as well...ONLY, we have them pretty bad and are using....TERMINIX!! They were recommended to me, now I'm scared!!!! Do you mind me asking how much you guys paid?

I am having the bait put all around my house (pretty big house, and lots of stations) but we are paying about $2k!!!!

Re: nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

The problem with Terminix is that they don't kill the termites at all. They take the bait, go back to the nest and the termites that exist cannot reproduce. In the meantime, the ones that are already alive and the ones on their way to your house continue to munch away at your house. Also the nest may be really far so it may take months before they are eradicated.

And this does not prevent the queen from reproducing, only the workers, so the nest continues and eventually will have workers again.

So it may take months before they are gone, and they may come back again.

Also, Terminix has an agreement with the drug company that prohibits them from using any additional treatment. So, if you use an independent company it will be cheaper, and they will use 2 or 3 methods to get rid of the problem. They do not have to cow-tow to a drug company.

We unfortunately have the termites inside the ktichen wall, so the price we got for internal spot treatment, exterior drilling/chemical pump and bait traps around entire perimiter... $1600. We're using Victor Pest Control - I don't have the info with me, but here is what's listed from whitepages.com

Victor Pest Control Corp
58 Old Farm Rd,
Levittown, NY 11756
(516) 579-2171

ETA - this is all covered under warranty to completely destroy and deter the termites from returning. The chemical is effective for 5-7 years and will prevent termites from returning to our house.

I know about termites, not a pretty situation. We had to replace the entire sill plate on our house and about 80% of the exterior plywood due to termite damage.

Re: nooo.....Termites!!!!!!

OK, so we had ours done today. He set up 16 traps around the perimeter of the house, which poisins the termites that eat the wood and then the bring the poison back to the colony so it is destroyed.
They come back every 45 days to check the traps.
What a pain in the azzzzzzz
