Nosey In-Laws?

Nosey In-Laws?

Does anyone else have this problem? My FIL's all mean well, but they but their noses in and give advice that is not necessary or asked for. I know I should just let them speak their piece and ignore it but it just gets on my nerves so much. Sorry, just needed to vent!!!!!

I have this problem. I have learned that there is only one logical thing to do. Listen, nod, and let it go in one ear, and out the other. You will stress less!

I hope things get easier for you!!

Re: Nosey In-Laws?

Same thing!!!! MIL is very nosy with our gifts who gave what and how much per person. She wanted us to register at stores that she liked which I do not like at all. She wanted us to register at Macy's and Fortunoff which I like Macy's but don't like Fortunoff. She was pushy and very dominating when we were making decisions. She didn't like the venue where we're having our ceremony since it's technically a non-denotionmal chapel not a RC church; plus where we have the ceremony and reception requires guests to travel. Our chapel was in Manhattan while our reception venue was in Queens thus guests will have to drive or take mass transit to get there which she didn't like and persue and pressure us to find another church in Queens. It was too late to get another church especially when we're not members. Plus, a previous family member's wedding of MIL's the church was in Manhattan and reception venue was in Larchmont, Westchester county!!! Thus, people had to travel to the suburbs so people can't travel from Manhattan to Queens? Ours venues are located in the 5 bouroughs of NYC.

DH had to put his foot on the her 'great idea' of finding another ceremony site when it was too late to do so. I had to put my foot down on the registry stores. It's our registry and the stuff we put on it we're going to have to use it and live with it so like it or not. The woman does not have to use it nor does she have to live with it. Oh yeah, after our honeymoon we open all our gifts in front of her as she so demanded to see everything--including monetary gifts. To make matters worse she pushed us to open a savings account in her choice of bank which I hate and we'd closed this account. The woman hasn't said anything great about this bank ever again and I had an run on incident with them as Roslyn Savings Bank do not cash or deposit foreign checks not even Canadian checks into any savings or checking accounts. The telephone representative was so irately rude as to yell her answer and slam the phone hanging up when I ask why a check was return to us when it was not paid by the payee (payee was a Canadian guest who did not attend our wedding but gave a monetary gift).

To maintain the peace between you and FMIL or MIL with her being nosy, domaining, and pushy about what to do... just say 'yes' nod your head and or ignore her until she can't say anything anymore. If she brings up something about the wedding plans like what limo company you used or what stores you're registered answer: 'it's all been taken care of.' Otherwise, ignore her advice say 'thank you for your suggestions but we would like to do XXX instead' out of courtesy although it's very annoying.

Re: Nosey In-Laws?

I would call them nosey - they just want to be involved. I agree with DrmBld - listen, nod and disregard.... or put the foot down now and prevent this from getting overbearing. One approach we took was to put it like this - 'when we tell you something, we are not looking for advice, just keeping you involved'. This was in response to my FMIL emailing me about some readings that might be better than the one we choose !!
