not happy

well back in march of 2006 i dropped off a check at my church for $25 for pre cana classes... but yesturday i realized that the check still has not been cleared so i called my church only to find out that precana will no longer be held at the church so i have to contact rockville center... which i did and there fee is $250.00 on top of that our priest is no longer going to be with us which means the donation of $750.00 will be going up... its funny how they say donation but then mandate how much u have to give...

has anyone ever given less then what they say you should give as a church donation??

Unfortunately, it happens. I don't think our Parish offered pre cana there anymore and we had to go through the Diocese of RVC. It's a two day event, so I almost rather pay more to have it completed in a shorter time frame than to go for weeks.

We never thought of giving less to the Parish, but ours did not call it a donation, it is the marriage ceremony fee.

Re: not happy

we just got our package in the mail the other day from our Church. it had the music suggestions, a reminder to attend confession prior to the wedding, and conveniently enough the donation envelope. no one ever mentions what the suggested amount is but i've been told $500. but we had an incident with them screwing up our start time. it was supposed to be 6pm but they had me down for 5pm so i had to re-do all of my invitations. FH was fuming mad and said he is taking the cost of the new invites out of the donation. I'm too scared to do it since we go to Church there every week, but he said there's no way in hell that they are getting the full amount.

In the package provided by my church they give the requested donation amount, but also mention that if this is a financial burden to talk to your priest and work out a new 'donation.'

I personally find it disgusting to request a certain amount, at that point, it's no longer a donation, it's a required fee. They should call it that. I do think your FH has a great point though....they cost you guys money by goofing up...and in reality, I would've made them change it back to 6 on their end, but since this didn't occur, I think deducting the cost is somewhat reasonable. It's a church and they 'run' off the charity of others, they shouldn't go around demanding money....that makes them just another vendor trying to take advantage of 'desperate' couples looking to get married and not 'live in sin.'

Unfortunately churches can not run without money, much like houses, charities, etc. My sister did her pre-cana through a person, it cost $50, they went to their house and ate Chinese food for 2 hours and were done... I'll ask her for the name

It's a shame but they can ask whatever they want and I don't know if you would be allowed not to pay what they 'request'.

I had a lot of problems with my church in terms of attitudes, not treating us right and just not caring that we were getting married there at all.

But it's my church from when I was little and FH proposed there--what choice do I have? Normally, I would gladly give the money because I love my Church and my old priests who are no longer there-- but things have changed since this new priest, big time.

I'm sorry that happened to you, I hope you are able to work something out...

You can take pre cana anywhere. We only paid $60 per couple at St. Josephs in Ronkonkoma.
Not sure if you need to be a parish member, but we have 3 churchers in our parish district-
you should call around.

I have a real problem with the Catholic church! I was raised Catholic but the horror stories I hear make me raging mad! I feel like they exploit so many people. And they should not call it a donation unless you are the person deciding the amount, if they tell you then its a fee and theya re being such LIARS by calling it a donation, I get so heated thinking about these things!!!
