Was talking with my parents yesterday who seem to think that registering is rude because it's like you EXPECT people to spend X dollars and buy what YOU want rather than it being a gift and celebration about getting married. On the other hand, they understood the perk about not getting double and about getting things that are in line with your taste.... I don't know.... what do you think?
We are litearlly going to be starting out with NOTHING - we both live at home currently and I'm finishing up graduate school, so it's not like we have apartments and need to make sure we don't get bedding or pots or something, ya know? ANYTHING would be a help....
Hmmmm.... TIA

Re: Not registering?
I did register, but honestly the whole point of a registry is that you put on a wide range of prices so that people DON'T feel obligated to spend a certain amount... I have items ranging from $3 or $4 up into the hundreds... so I don't really see how it's insisting that people buy you something for a certain price.
I too will be just starting out and need everything, and that's why I think it's essential for me to register, because I really do need a wide range of things, and this way I can really guarantee that I get more of what I need rather than 3 toasters and 4 coffee pots that I can't return because I don't have a registry or a reciept, but not having any plates or a basic frying pan to make breakfast in.
It seems that most people expect there to be a registry, and honestly for most people it just makes it a lot easier for them because they don't have to guess what you might want, but can see exactly what your tastes are and choose from there. And those who prefer to do the work themselves... that's fine too! It's not a command, just a request.

Re: Not registering?
I completely agree with the previous post.
Also, if you want to be sure that people don't feel any obligation to buy you anything, then don't put any registry cards in the bridal shower invites or engagement party invites (if you have one). This way, if someone 'wants' to get you a gift, they can ask your parents, your Fh's parents, or your BM's where you are registered and can decide on their own.
It is totally about celebrating your love and commitment, but it is also about you and your FH starting a new life together. people who care for you and your FH want to help you with setting up your home and this new life. Hope this helps.

Re: Not registering?
the belief of not registering is very old school....i remember when FSIL was getting married and her grandmother thought registering was rude.....but these are the times in which we love and EVERYONE registers! dont feel bad about it like the others said there will be a variety of prices on your registry that can accomadate all of your guests........im sure they would want to give you a gift that you really want

Re: Not registering?
I am not registering - but that's because we bought a house almost four years ago and have all we need.
I think if you are just starting out its a great idea. And as a friend/family member I would want to give you a gift and a registry makes it easy!

Re: Not registering?
you should definately register -- i don't agree with what your parents said. People WANT to buy you gifts to celebrate and by registering, they are guarenteed that they'll be giving you something YOU like, rather than having them spend hours tryng to guess what you might like.

Same with me, I'm not registering because I have everything I need. I'm also not having a shower. But in general, registries make it easier for someone to buy you a gift. I've never heard it considered rude at all.

Did anyone else NOT register? If not, why?

My best friend got married about a year and a half ago and didn't register. She didn't want a shower AT ALL. Of course - we did a work shower for her but we had to have her DH take her shopping and get ideas and set up a small registry for us so we would know what to buy. Personally - I think a registry really gives the guests an idea of what you like. How else would they know? You could wind up with 15 different colors of towels!!

Totally agree with this. It makes it easier for the guests, and with a wide price range they can choose what they want. I think it is very acceptable to have a registry these days...people expect it and rely on it now to buy gifts. I think most people understand/appreciate the fact that they know they are buying something the bride and groom wants/needs.

Re: Not registering?
Personally as a guest I love it when people register it saves me the time and guess work, and its nice ot know that I am buying something the bride & groom want & need.
I say register, just make sure ot include all price ranges.
