Not so good first day

Not so good first day

It makes me very sad to post this. My first day was horrible. My first into to the kids was in my 1st class when I was told, 'We made the other ***** leave, you are next.' I was told to go f-myself, I was told that I would be f-ed up, and I was told to get in a gang for protection. The students were out of control. They have been without a teacher for a month and they were truly out of control. I have NEVER seen anything like this nor have I EVER been treated with such disrespect. I spent my entire lunch period in tears!

Threats, detention, screaming, calling home, etc... none of them seemed to work. I left a few messages for parents but do not hold out much hope.

I felt like I was in a juvi hall, not a school!

Not to mention, I drove an hour and a half each way!

On the way home, I called my mom, a teacher of 30+ years who told me we cannot be compatible with every situation and with all people.

I cannot stop crying

I'm so sorry to hear this. These kids sound like they need more help than you can offer them. They need a parole officer not a teacher.

All I can do is offer hugs..

i don't work with kids, but i do work with elderly alzheimer's/dementia patients. it's so easy to take things so personally.

you have such an honorable job ...

hang in there--- it's tough emotionally but always remember why you're there--- to help kids and hope for a better future.

I know exactly how you feel....my last year as a building sub was excrusciating. What kind of support do you have with the administration?

Sometimes the best way to gain respect is to give it - though with tough love. DO NOT let them see you upset. Sometimes teaching is more like acting...you'll get through it. 1st day always is bad

is this in the city? my sister is a NYC teacher... I've heard some of the same stories from her, but not to this degree!

I am so sorry Daniela! I hope it gets better with each day!

I know it is hard. Try to find a way to get their attention. Bring in candy. Everytime a student answers a question toss it at them. Also create a rewards system. I know this sounds like bribery but it may work. Being without a teacher for a month does things to students. FM me if you need help.
