Not sure what to do...

Not sure what to do...

I am REALLY unhappy with the band-DJ combo we currently have booked. He plays mostly older music and I have heard him play before and I was not exactly thrilled. We booked them mostly because my dad really likes them and so does some of his friends. However, I have tried contacting him many times. He does not return my calls and when he does and I ask to meet w/ him he tells me that he is too busy and all he needs to know is our first dance song. He said whatever the band can't play they will have the DJ play. I really wanted the DJ to play more then the band, so I said I want to give the band a list of songs and the DJ a (longer) list of songs to appease the older guests and the younger guests (which makes up 70% of the guests coming). I was told that I would be able to request the DJ play more before we booked. He told me that if I wanted to drive out to one of his gigs (45 minutes away) he can sit with me for 5 minutes during a break. I don't have time for that being in grad school w/ practicuum and working and planning a wedding. He told me to mail him a play list then and he'll call me (does not have a good track record for that). He then asked me...'well, what if we don't know the song you want us to play?' and 'what if the DJ does not have the song?'. I'm confused...he wanted to come to the wedding and play what HE wanted? My mom told me to just deal with it...my dad and I got into it about it and told me to go hire a DJ if I wanted. I don't know what to do at this point. Music is very important to me...and I know it's a big part of the wedding, but this guy is not making me feel real confident right now. I am so nervous that no one will dance...more importantly...that WE won't dance. What would you do in this situation.

PS I know I went against my better judgement booking this guy in the first place, but I thought I was doing the right thing at the time.

That really stinks, I definitely sympathize with you because music is one of the most important to aspects of the wedding, it sets the tone of the night. This is your day, not your parents, you have to consider that your friends and other guests might want to dance their butts off! I would be horrified if the band I booked played only my parents type of music! I think that you should try to get this guy on the phone and tell him that you are unhappy with the way things have progressed and you are at the point where you feel you might have to cancel his services. Be forceful to get what YOU WANT!! You got my support!!

This sounds a little familiar to me can you tell me what band you booked?

It's not my parents...they had good intentions and did not realize things were going to turn out this way. They were told that I would have better choices then what I am getting...so it's not them. I appreciate everything they have done...including this. It's this guy...he wants to play my wedding like this is a concert for him.

Go with your judgement. Because you don't want this to turn into an issue on your wedding day. This man is too busy to meet with you, doesn't want to stick to a playlist....that wouldn't sit well with me. You're hiring him to perform a service and he should be able to accomodate your requests. I think it's unprofessional to say 'Well what if we can't play/DJ doesn't have that particular song?' Aren't you giving at least the DJ enough notice to maybe find the song?

Good luck! Hope it all works out!

Fix it now. You will regret it if you don't. Either work something out with the guy or try to get out of the contract.

Music is important. Kinda sets the tone.... I don't blame you for being worried.

Good Luck!

i agree. in the end, many brides have found that 'going with their gut' paid off. i know of a bride who had a trial with a very highly recommended vendor and the person never showed or called. she had to go with her gut, no matter how many good stories she'd heard/seen, and not reschedule or book. you have to be comfortable.
