But when did 'should have'/'should've' or 'could have'/'could've' become should of and could of?

eta -my cousin in high school does this constantly even though I've corrected her

I prefer shoulda or coulda when I am feeling too infinitely lazy to say two words. jk

Not in terms of pronounciation - we all do it. But when she (my cousin) emails me, she will type 'could of' - I mean, don't your English teachers correct you when you write papers? Does spell check not work for you?

Nevermind. I'm a snob then.

spell check won't pick up on that error, there is nothing misspelled - maybe grammar check would though...

let's test. brb.

Well, we should have grammar check.
She seriously thinks I'm crazy for correcting her. I guess I have to get over it.

FIRST laurie calls you a snob, THEN she uses spelling and grammar check to test the idea...

THIS STUFF is why more girls should of read/posted on NWR when planning their weddings. for the entertainment value alone!

should of, would of, could of.

Mel, that's one of my pet peeves as well!

I have a girlfriend who has a graduate degree. I completed high school only. Before graduating, she asked ME to proof some of her papers. I never wanted to embarrass her, so the suggestions I made were always very tactful. BUT HER SPELLING AND GRAMMAR ERRORS WERE UNBELIEVABLE. I was like 'how the hell did you EVER make it to graduate level??'

could of (and would of and should of) are just one of my biggest pet peeves.
