NWR 1st grade teachers

Congrats on your new job!! There are so few elementary jobs out there consider yourself very lucky! (I should know I have been looking for 4 years!) In terms of first grade stuff...It is much easier and much harder than 4th for different reasons. On the plus side...there is no state testing in 1st! The kids are just adorable!! You can incorporate so many fun ideas into you lessons. On the down side some kids may be very hard to control at this age. You may have a lot of kids pulled out for reading, speech, math enrichment, etc. so at times it is hard to keep everyone on the same page. There are so many resources on the internet for this age group. I would just do a search. Again congrats!

congrats on your new job! I don't teach 1st grade, I teach 2nd grade, but I would make sure that you have lots of math manipulatives. I found them very helpful when I switched from teaching 5th grade to teaching 2nd grade. I would also make sure you have stuff to do a morning meeting (calendar, days of the week, counting to the 100th day of school, etc). If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Where is your new job?

I have been teaching second grade for the past 9 years. Next year, I will be teaching first. I would get crowns for their birthdays and incentive charts. I like to use a lot of bright colors bc it makes the classroom look cheerful. You could buy little paper frogs and decorate the door with their names for the first day. They really like that. You could label it 'Look who is hopping into class 1-209!' Buy cute read aloud books like The Kissing Hand. That book usually helps the children who are crying for their parents.
