for those of you that purchased a home recently, can some of you share with me how much work you had to do when you first moved in and the expenses associated with them? as we all know living here on long island isn't cheap and the houses in affordable price ranges for first time buyers are 50+ yrs old...just curious to see what everyone has dealt with as i am dealing with this now and im scared

NWR: 1st home
First thing we did was paint and flooring (they do wonders for the overall feel and look and are fairly cheap - FH installed laminate, tile and carpet throughout). Not sure how old your heating system is but we put ours under a service contract right away since it has seen better days. Thank god we did because we have had to replace really expensive parts but it was all included in our contract! We did also have a cesspool issue in the first couple of months we were there and it cost around $400 to put some chemicals and some other stuff. We haven't had a problem with that since.
FH is VERY handy so he does a lot of the fixing up himself so we save a lot that way.
We will be in the house 3 years in December and our thought process on fixing things up is - when its warm out, we concentrate on the outside and when its cold out we concentrate on the inside. It has worked out pretty well so far

We bought our house 4 years ago but it is over 50 years old. Luckily it was in good condition just really outdated, I'm talking wall to ceiling pink bathrooms. My best advice would be to spend your money on the things that NEED to be done first- ie getting a new roof was more important that re-doing the pink bathroom just bc it is ugly. The first thing we did was paint the whole house (paint can make a huge difference) Since we didn't have the money to do our kitchen we painted the cabinets and it looks 100% better. We ended up needing to replace the boiler which was about $6,500. We just gutted our basement bathroom and hope to keep it under $4k. Still haven't done main bathroom or kitchen. Like I said take care of all of the important stuff first and after that focus on one project at a time otherwise it can be overwhelming.

NWR: 1st home
we bought a house just over 2 years ago and it is over 70 years old. We painted, had to get a new washer and dryer and a roof. My parents paid for the roof as a house warming gift. They are awesome! :) Other wise just little odds and ends. Like recently we had to change the piping for the bathroom sink.

We just decided to build so we know (hopefully) what we're getting into... it's amazing how quickly everything adds up though! Just make sure your inspector is independent of the selling agent... I've heard some bad stories about that.
Holy Cow!! Your building?! Thats amazing! Congrats! Ideally thats what I would like to do but every time I bring it up to FH I get this : . We just started to look at whats available in our area and were probably just going to buy a small starter home after the wedding.. something $150k or less... I dont want to lock us down into some huge mortgage payment..

Yea, we are very fortunate because FH has a home he owns with his brothers, and they're selling so we have a good chunk to put down. We looked at all options, and originally we were going to just buy a fixer upper for cheap.... but once we realized how much we were going to have to put into it we decided to look at this new development just for the heck of it. They were more than we thought we were going to spend, but we got an AMAZING deal on a lot that someone bought but the deal fell through. We are so lucky, and will hopefully be in by the end of October!
that's AMAZING! i wanted to build also...but the land alone was 220K and the builder we consulted with wanted 180-200/sq ft...just not in our price range right now...where is the development if you don't mind me asking?
