NWR: 1st yr teacher already home sick! :(

Ugh I feel so guilty!!

I'm not even through two months of teaching and already I'm home sick. My throat was killing me yesterday, and then at about 12am, I was really feeling like I was getting strep. So I'm staying home to see a doctor. Although now my throat doesn't feel as bad- maybe I should've gone in! UGGGHHH

I know that i have a disadvantage over other teachers- not only being in my first year so I'm bound to get sick alot more easily since the immune system isn't used to all these germs....but since I'm the music teacher in an elementary school I see every single kid and I get every single germ that passes through. Not to mention, these kids are touching instruments, I'm touching them...God only knows where their hands have been. Sorry TMI!! haha

So...first year and former first year teachers...how often did you call out sick? Should I even feel this guilty?

I just started my student teaching this semester and I can tell you that I have been sick since the first week and I continue to be.

Hope you feel better

Thanks!

Ya know, I think I was sick maybe one day during student teaching- I consider myself lucky!!

Now I feel even more guilty- throat doesn't hurt anymore. Now it's just nothing but mucus...yet my nose isn't running. I have no idea what I have but it s----cks!

Dont feel guilty- you'll feel REALLY guilty if you STAY at work, and get the KIDS sick too!!! Take your time to recover, keep your germs to yourself! And feel better

in my first year of teaching I got larengitis (don't know how to spell it) and really bad colds like i never had before. Now in my sixth year of teaching I hardly ever get sick. Believe me I know those kids have their hands in their noses in the pants (sorry) everywhere but after this year it will get better.

If you're in the public schools you get sick days and almost everyone uses them don't feel guilty even as a first year teacher, in the beginning I was out about 3 or 4 days that year. bring a doctor's note and no one can make you feel guilty :)

If you teach in NYC you are entitled to 10 sick days per year...use them! don't feel guilty....I usually use b/w 7-8

You are gonna get sick a lot your first year...I took all of my sick days my first year.
eventually you get used to the germs and you won't get sick at all

I am an Asst. Principal, former teacher - I still get sick but i try not to take off if i can help it - saving my days to tack on to my eventual maternity leave!!

But, you can't take care of kids if you don't take care of yourself!!

I got sick my first year at the end of Sept. with walking pnemonia! I was out for almost a week! You have to be healthy! I dont know any principal that would want you to come to work sick! Do what you have to do to stay healthy! Feel better!

Actually I think I was very lucky - Student teaching I only got sick my LAST week student teaching. Then the following year I worked as a TA with special ed kids - who can be quite gross!! I only got sick three times that year and never called out sick. Then last year was my first real teaching job and I was sick almost every break - but I never called out sick last year. This year (knock on wood) I have not gotten sick yet!!!

I find that if you are feeling iffy about being sick you should go in anyway to show your face, then if you find you cannot stay the day, go to the nurse, she will probably tell you to go home....

DOnt' feel guilty about it... you are given sick days for a reason!! i felt guilty about the ONE day i was out last year because i was in the emergency room! i look back now, and i was like, i should have taken the days i needed!!

i tend to take them when i am onyl really sick.... it's good to save them for the future... god forbid, you may need to use a LOT in the future at one time....

You're all so sweet- thanks!!

Well I went back in today. I'm exhausted, and not 100% but I probably didn't look sick to them! They probably figured I was faking it! Why I'd pick a Thursday to do that, I dunno haha!! I'd rather fake a Friday haha!

It wasn't strep so I feel more guilty in that respect...I think I called out sooner than I should have. But it was okay- they all loved the sub and I totally had her prepared- thank God!

I wouldn't be surprised if this turned into bronchitis...ugggghhh. But today was easy enough- I really missed those kids and had so much fun with them!!
