My mom has Thanksgiving every year. Now we have about 25 people which is a lot-we like to keep things a little smaller. That being said...
My mom and step father went out to dinner with some friends the other night. So they ask my mom: 'What are you guys doing for Thanksgiving?' My mom says: 'We are having my family over (not my step father's family-we get together with them in the afternoon on X-mas day). So the wife says to my mom: 'Can we come to your Thanksgiving?' !!!!!!!!!! My mom ignored her until she asked again and put my mom on the spot-so my mom felt forced to say yes. I told her that at Thanksgiving I am going to ask them: ' What are you guys doing for X-mas-Can I come over?'
Now I told my mom I would post this and ask my girls what you thought-honestly. Is this not really friggin RUDE???????

wow. Are these friends going through tough times? If so, that's the ONLY way that it wouldn't be rude...and even then it's still uncomfortable to put your mom on the spot!
Yikes.
Save me some turkey.

Re: NWR
Yaaaa!!! Who asks that?!!!
Thanksgiving is totally for close relatives and perhaps even close friends IF they are invited! Why ask IMO?
But hey, what can you do? The more the merrier! Just tell them to bring a dish!

Re: NWR
Thank you! We wouldn't have minded if they had even hinted that they had no where to go-my mom would have invited them right away-but it was just the fact that they invited themselves.

Ummmm, yeah that's WAY RUDE!!!!
Spinoff to that.
My mom invites my FILs to Thanksgiving this year; kind of a blending of families thing, Well, FMIL declines and says, no thanks, we're going to just stay home and have steak this year.
STEAK. Instead of a delicious home cooked wonderful Martha Stewartesque meal. Am I wrong to be offended?

Re: NWR
that is so rude!!!!! I def think you should invite yourself to her house for xmas.
I had a similar thing happen. When we got engaged my Mom's sister's sister-in-law called my mom to congratulate us. Then she asked 'I'm going to be invited to the engagement party right?' . My mom didn't know what to say so she just said that we didn't know what we were doing yet. How nervy!!! I couldn't believe it.. I would never.. i would just feel like the biggest @$$!!!!

You are not wrong at all.. that is soooooo rude!!! What does FH say?
My mom always tried to get together with FH's parents. They always decline saying that she doesnt know when her husband is working (FDNY). I understand that he is busy and works a lot but make an effort for christ sake!
My FH doesn't know what to do with his mom. I feel bad because my mom tries so hard and they make no effort

FH thinks I shouldn't care but I DO. I think it's ok to decline an invitation as long as you do it with manners. STEAK?! Who eats steak on TG?
Anyway, I have the same prob as you. FILs are not into being social with my parents. It's a little weird, I think. i mean, just go out for a dinner...It takes like 2 hours and you're obligation is done!
