Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
Santina, it's NEVER too late. If you're not happy with what you're currently doing and know what can make you happy you're one step ahead of the game. I know a lot of teachers and they really love what they do. Not only is it rewarding but the hours and vacation time doesn't stink either
I understand how you feel about the 'finance world.' I was in the travel industry and when 9/11 happened the travel biz all but dried up. I paniced and got into finance (marketing) and HATED it! I lasted 8 months and ran back to the travel world.
Good luck & remember 28 is still very young ( I wish I were still 28 )

I think it's never to late to change careers. And just think, teaching will be a better career if and when you decide to have children.

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
Its never too late to change careers. Teaching is a very rewarding job, and I know you have the patience to deal with it!
FMIL is a teacher, and FSIL is also a teacher. (so I know a lil something to help you out! If you get a job now with the Board of Ed, you will be enrolled in the Fellowship program will basically allows you to start teaching w/ a bachelor's degree (in anything other than education) and then they give you abt 3 yrs to complete your master's in Education. Its a really good program! (ETA: You will get your master's for free!)
Fm me if you want more details. Good Luck Santina!

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
I don't personally know anything about it, but think it is great that your trying to find out all the pros and cons before making any changes. Also, i don't want to offend any teachers, the following is just one experience.
My sister is a teacher in the city........she HATES it, your over educated, underpaid, and treated like sh*t by principles and parents. she's in a bad neighborhood, he kids are animals and can't behave long enough to learn. There is no discipline, no detention/ suspension.
There is no appeals for a teacher accused of corpral punishment. My sister was accused of pushing a 4th grader who was kicked out of his last public school for trying to set it on fire. (accused by the 4th grader) and now its in her file.
Also she has no control over teaching methods. The city micromanages all her lesson plans (especially readiing and math). Plus, her class is over crowded.
Private/ religous schools pay like sh*t
The best place to work is Long Island, but I hear it's not very easy to get a steady job in long island public schools, without knowing someone, or waiting patiently for an opening.
But take my recommendation with a grain of salt, because I'm a attorney and also would not recommend this career to my worst enemy.
If i had to do it all over again I would go into nursing (good pay, respect, lots of jobs). Oh well, my next life.
good luck with whatever career choice you make. I hope you are happy.

Knowing is half the battle, you know finance is not for you then go for what it is you really like and you believe is rewarding in the long run a job you enjoy is most important

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
Well I am a 2nd year teacher and I am actually thinking about changing careers. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love working and being with the kids, but I can not stand the fact, that my work day never ends. I get up at 6 every day and get to work at 7. The kids get in at 9 and leave around 3 and I stay until 4. (I'm not the type of teacher to stay late, I just need to go home and unwind). So I get home around 4:30. Watch a little tv and eat dinner and from 6 - 10ish - 11ish work on lesson plans, grade papers, reply to emails, etc. It is very draining. I teach special ed and I'm lucky in the sense that I only have 7 students, but there are different challenges that come along with special ed. I don't know. I keep thinking about a 9-5 job, but then I think about working in the summer and I just can't think of doing that. Teaching is a lot of work and I don't think people realize that until they are actually in the field doing it. Just think about that beforehand. Yes, at times it can be very gratifying, but in the same respect if you work in a wealthy area, parents can be a real pain in the butt. I just feel like I am going to get burned out so fast. Anyways, that is my take on it.

This is exactly how I feel too. If I could do it over, I never would have become a teacher. And I really thought it would be perfect for me.

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
SO many people started out in business that are now going for their masters in education. I'm in the program right now and a lot of my classmates have been in business and made a career change. You'd be surprised. I say go for it and good luck!

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
This is my second year teaching. i must be honest - last year i HATED it, came home crying pretty much every day. my class wasnt that bad but i was having trouble with teh administration. it seemed that no matter what i did, i was wrong.
This year is COMPLETELY different - i love it! Im more focused this year and i have alot more confidence (my first year i taught out of license - im supposed to teach LA i was teaching LA, Math Science and social studies!) You should definietly look into it tho - it is very rewarding (but there are always those days where you come home wanted to rip your hair out )
did you check out teaching fellows program?

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
I highly recommend this. I am doing it, I was working in Manhattan in business for 2 1/2 years. I hated it, I went back to school at night and am getting my masters in elmentary education. I quit my job in Oct and am now subbing full time. I love it! I took 2 out of the 3 tests, my last test is Dec 9th then I become officially certified. I would do it, if you have any questions def send me an FM and I'll be happy to help in any way! Good Luck!

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
Ive been teaching for 11 yrs and i have to tell you:
teaching is NOT as easy as people think it is. There are MANY teachers i work w/ who did it as a second career thinking that its 'so easy'. I love my job....BUT.... teaching is definately 'a business'.
There are rewards to teaching but state demands , and esp on LI, parents and administrators can be TOUGH!!!
Please DO NOT go into teaching if you are looking for 'less hours' and the summers off. As i said, Ive been teaching 11 yrs and i walk into my classroom at 7am each day and dont leave til 4.
I hope that you make a decision that will make you HAPPY! But i do want you to see the 'real side' of teaching bc its not all 'play'
Please FM me if you have any other questions
GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: NWR: Thinking about changing careers
I was also working in an office job through college and after college and hated it. I wanted a job that was more fulfilling and where I would actually look forward to going to each day. I thought about going into teaching and of the numerous teachers that I know, some were really happy in it and some were miserable. I really wanted to work with teenagers so I chose school counseling and got my masters in it earlier this year. A large portion of the people in my program had started out in the business field and hated it. Some of them were even in the 40's and 50's and wanted to change careers. Although it took a couple of years, a large loan to do it, long internship hours, and a lot of work, I know this is the job I am meant to do. The only problem...there are hardly any jobs out there so now I am playing the waiting game and still in an office job. I've heard elementary school teachers and other subject areas such as English are tough to get jobs in on Long Island. Math and science are usually much easier. You also have to think about where you would want to work.. out of state, Long Island, or the city. I know two elementary school teachers that will only work on Long Island and now two years later they still haven't found work. It's sad but sometimes it's all about who you know. Best of luck to you. I believe it is worth it to take a risk to try and better your life.

Hunny, GO FOR IT!!!!!! I absolutely love my job, there's no where else I'd rather be! The children bring me so much joy, I couldn't see myself doing anything else (plus who can complain about the Summer's off, holidays and snow days...lolo) I think it's a great field, you will probably be really happy!!!! I teach in NJ though requirements are totally diff. then in NY so I can't tell you where to start there!!! Good luck!!! XOXOXO Kitty
