NWR

So i need to ask my bosses for a raise and I'm a little nervous. I usually get raises without asking so this will be the first. I feel a little awkward asking face to face do you think via email is appropriate?

How do or have you asked for a raise at work - Via email or face to face?

if you have an HR department I would discuss with them.. If not, I would schedule a 'performance review' with your superior to go over the things you do/ benefits to the company that deserve a raise.. Make sure you are strict on what you want and don't ask them 'for a raise' without naming your price..

I have asked for a raise during my performance review. They didn't give it to me because the company was recently sold, but, gave me a bonus which would have been about the raise in a lump sum...

I am no longer with them because the company folded less than a year after the new owner took over.

I HATE THIS!

I ask during my yearly performance review.

I think it's the perfect time and in a way, they probably expect it. You make your case on what a fabulous job you did last year and make sure to mention any additional responsibilities you have taken on so that they have to give you some more money!

The first time I did it I was scared to death but I was completely being underpaid and they knew it so I got a good raise. Last year I asked and they blamed the economy and i got the tad more than standard which is better than nothing.

I am due for my review this month so I'm asking again

eta: If you are not due for your review for a while but you think you deserve a raise, you can definitely set a time to talk to your boss. FH is better than me with being aggressive and he's gotten two raises in a year because he's not shy about asking.

Yikes!! We don't do performance reviews here. We're a start up firm and havent really gotten there yet. I am the HR and office manager so i've got no one to ask but them unless i ask myself

If you guys are a smaller company and you interact with your manager(s) on a daily basis, I would maybe send them a note and just say hey do you have a few minutes to chat I wanted to discuss something with you. And then do it in person - I don't think e-mail is a good way. You should come prepared to the meeting about why you think you deserve a raise (mention great things you've done), and just say you'd love to be considered for a raise/promotion based on all those merits.
